{"id":15073,"date":"2019-08-29T17:41:41","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T15:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=15073"},"modified":"2019-08-29T17:42:39","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T15:42:39","slug":"leave-dead-people-alone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/leave-dead-people-alone\/","title":{"rendered":"Leave dead people alone!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A long time ago, someone who was upset because we were talking about <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong> in a well-known radio show that I hosted several years ago, <em>El duende y el t\u00e1rab<\/em>, called our live phone-in line and yelled \u201cLeave dead people alone!\u201d. We were analyzing and talking critically about the discography of that master from Mairena del Alcor. Such thing still happens nowadays, particularly in the social networks, where anyone who posts anything about this important <em>cantaor<\/em> that\u2019s not flattery or adulation gets immediately blasted. This not only happens with Mairena, but also with <strong>Marchena, Caracol<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Camar\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There is an interview of <strong>Chac\u00f3n<\/strong>, by Bagaria, where he trashes colleagues like <strong>Juan Breva<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Canario de \u00c1lora <\/strong>because, in his opinion, they had contributed to the dissolution of <em>cante gitano<\/em>. He questioned the legacy of those two stars from M\u00e1laga, and that didn\u2019t bother anyone. Mairena, to give another example, was very critical of his colleagues, publicly and privately, and that created some conflicts. Privately he said many strong things, which are recorded, about artists that I will not name so hell doesn\u2019t break loose.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abAnyone who posts anything about Antonio Mairena in the social networks that\u2019s not flattery or adulation gets immediately blasted. This also happens with Marchena, Caracol or Camar\u00f3n\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The worst thing that could happen to Mairena, Caracol or Marchena is that people stop talking or writing about them, for better or worse. There are dozens and dozens of <em>cantaores<\/em> who have fallen into oblivion, perhaps unfairly. Does anyone write about <strong>Juan Varea, Pepe el Culata<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>El Gloria<\/strong>? They were extraordinary <em>cantaores<\/em>. Yet, they were no match for the aforementioned artists, not even close. None of them revolutionized flamenco or had a great influence in other generations of artists, as was the case with Chac\u00f3n, Marchena, Manolo Caracol and Antonio Mairena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrique Morente<\/strong>\u00a0has perhaps been the most criticized <em>cantaor<\/em> of the last fifty years. Talking about this, he once told me, two years before he died: \u201cI rather have my work analysed now, while I\u2019m still alive, because I know that after I die people will be more forgiving\u201d. There has never been a more sharp and clear mind than that of this master from Granada.<\/p>\n<p>What is the problem with analyzing the works of the artists? None. In the case of Mairena, his memory is alive and well precisely because people have not stopped talking and writing about him since he died. \u00a0Good and bad things, of course. No oeuvre is perfect, not even God\u2019s.
