{"id":14695,"date":"2019-08-14T01:22:38","date_gmt":"2019-08-13T23:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=14695"},"modified":"2019-08-14T01:28:17","modified_gmt":"2019-08-13T23:28:17","slug":"antonio-chacon-and-mairena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/antonio-chacon-and-mairena\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonio Chac\u00f3n and Mairena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought that, since this year is the 90<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Chac\u00f3n\u2019s death and the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of his birth, the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/festivalmairena.com\/\">Festival del Cante Jondo Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>could somehow have honored this star of <em>cante jondo<\/em> who wasn\u2019t held in high esteem by his namesake. It would be a way to set the record straight. In fact, <strong>Ni\u00f1o de Mairena<\/strong>\u00a0always knew the importance of Chac\u00f3n, because he wasn\u2019t a fool and he definitely knew a thing or two about <em>cante<\/em>. Yet, the <em>mairenistas<\/em> still refuse to give any credit to that chubby, bald <em>cantaor<\/em> from Jerez who was such a crucial piece in the history of good <em>cante<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I remember when that writer from Jerez came to the University of Seville, invited by the <em>mairenistas<\/em>, and said that \u201cSilverio and Chac\u00f3n were singers of <em>coplas<\/em>\u201d, implying that they weren\u2019t even worthy of being called <em>cantaores<\/em>. He wasn\u2019t criticized for stating such claim, but was rather loudly praised by <em>mairenistas<\/em> everywhere. Why wasn\u2019t a conference about Chac\u00f3n and Mairena programmed in the Cultural Week that takes place just before the Festival? I would have given a free lecture, just to set the record straight, not aiming to antagonize anyone but to clarify some things about the relationship between those two great <em>cantaores<\/em>. There wasn\u2019t any sort of relationship between them because Chac\u00f3n went to his grave without having ever listened to Ni\u00f1o de Mairena. Yet, Mairena attended a performance of Chac\u00f3n at least once, and it was in Seville\u2019s Prado, when the master from Jerez was near retirement, in 1927. It\u2019s possible that Mairena never owned a record of Chac\u00f3n, because one day in 1978 I took to his house <strong>Pepe Carrasco<\/strong>\u2019s record collection, <em>Los ases del flamenco<\/em>, and when he saw Chac\u00f3n\u2019s record he was very interested in it, although in the end he put it aside and only took two, those of <strong>Manuel Torres<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Ni\u00f1o Gloria<\/strong>, both of them Gypsies, incidentally.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abThe mairenistas still refuse to give any credit to that chubby, bald cantaor from Jerez who was such a crucial piece in the history of good cante. Do you think they\u2019ll allow me talk about those things in Mairena del Alcor?\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re aware of how Mairena came to know by heart Chacon\u2019s <em>cantes<\/em>. If you\u2019re not, let me tell you:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For a long time, I had to listen to those \u2018cantes levantinos\u2019 that she liked so much, to the point that I ended up learning Chac\u00f3n\u2019s cantes by heart.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, this is written in Mairena\u2019s confessions. The woman he was referring to was <strong>La Macilenta<\/strong>, an old prostitute who had a brothel in Seville\u2019s Alameda district and, according to him, had befriended Chac\u00f3n in her younger years. Is it fair to scorn Chac\u00f3n in such way? I say this because when the master died in 1929, Mairena was 20 years old and already performed. So did he never own any of Chac\u00f3n\u2019s slate records? Didn\u2019t he study the master in those days, but rather had to listen to his cante from an old madam? Well, no, Mairena supposedly learned everything from Gypsy masters. If he ever studied non-Gypsy masters, something he did, he seldom acknowledged it<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Manolito Ord\u00f3\u00f1ez<\/strong>, a record collector from Seville, told me that Antonio often visited his house to tape cantes from his slate record collection and he would ask for songs by <strong>El Mochuelo<\/strong>, a non-Gypsy <em>cantaor<\/em>. \u201cBy Mochuelo, Antonio?\u201d, he asked the first time, surprised. \u201cYes, he\u2019s a good one to study\u201d, answered the master of Alcores. He would also request cantes by <strong>Manuel Vega\u00a0<em>El Carbonerillo<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>(Gypsy) and <strong>Fernando el Herrero <\/strong>(non-Gypsy). That is, like a good aficionado, he learned from everyone, but according to his confessions and the lectures he gave through his life, the maestros he learned from were exclusively Gypsy.<\/p>\n<p>A few times he spoke about Chac\u00f3n, but not often. He never even acknowledged that Don Antonio always spoke highly of the Gypsy masters of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, such as the <strong>Marrurros, Joaqu\u00edn Lacherna, El Mellizo, Loco Mateo<\/strong> and <strong>Curro Dulce<\/strong>. That\u2019s because Mairena, in fact, always considered any performer who wasn\u2019t Gypsy to be an intruder. That\u2019s why he famously called Pepe Marchena a \u201cfalse idol\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Do you think they\u2019ll allow me talk about those things in Mairena del Alcor?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
