{"id":14670,"date":"2019-08-13T01:08:57","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T23:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=14670"},"modified":"2019-08-13T01:20:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T23:20:43","slug":"tomas-and-sevillano-in-la-barqueta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/tomas-and-sevillano-in-la-barqueta\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom\u00e1s and Sevillano in La Barqueta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One day, the great cantaor <strong>Antonio el Sevillano<\/strong> told me that one evening he got together with some friends in order to party with <strong>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/strong>. At that time, Antonio already performed, but not professionally. They went to La Alameda and picked up Tom\u00e1s in a car to take him to a hamlet located in the area that is now the <em>Isla M\u00e1gica<\/em> theme park in the Barqueta district of Seville. The guitarist was <strong>Currito el de la Geroma<\/strong>, who was a good friend of Tom\u00e1s. He was already ill, so ill, in fact, that he passed away a few months later. But he was a brilliant guitarist, even better <em>cantaor<\/em> and he also played the piano <em>por<\/em> <em>buler\u00edas<\/em>. Tom\u00e1s wasn\u2019t even forty years old when that gathering took place and, according to Antonio, he was \u201cin shape\u201d. Tom\u00e1s took his time before he started singing, because he used to talk a lot about <em>cante<\/em> when he was with friends with good understanding of flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>In that place there was a gramophone and they listened to records of <b>Marchena, Carbonero<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Pastora<\/b>. Carbonerillo was still alive at the time, and Sevillano said that Tom\u00e1s really liked him and spoke wonders about him. Carbonerillo used to go often to the house of Pastora, with whom he performed many times in shows of the <em>\u00d3pera Flamenca<\/em>, sometimes joined by <strong>Pinto<\/strong>. If we listen carefully to the records of Carbonero, we can see that they were from the same school, and that he sought to emulate Tom\u00e1s in <em>soleares<\/em> and <em>seguiriyas<\/em>. Particularly when he sang the <em>cantes largos<\/em> of\u00a0<strong>El Mellizo<\/strong>:\u00a0\u201c<em>Me gusta a m\u00ed esta serrana\/ porque la encuentro a mi apa\u00f1o\u201d<\/em>. You can also notice Tom\u00e1s\u2019 influence when listening to \u201c<em>A mi mare de mi alma\/ lo que la camelo yo\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Tom\u00e1s and Reyes got married, as he agonized in his deathbed, so she could inherit his things. His things were three fishing rods, two birdcages, a gramophone, some slate records, two pocket watches and some novels.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When Tom\u00e1s and Currito got to work, that is, to sing and play the guitar, he surprised everyone singing Carbonerillo\u2019s <em>fandangos<\/em>. \u201cIt was a carbon copy\u201d, Antonio told me. He also said that in that evening he not only sang the <em>fandangos<\/em> of that genius from La Macarena, but also <em>malague\u00f1as<\/em> of <strong>Chac\u00f3n<\/strong> and <em>tarantas<\/em> of <strong>Escacena<\/strong>. Apparently, Tom\u00e1s was greatly skilled in imitating the voices of other <em>cantaores<\/em>. That reminds me of one evening in a banquet hall in Madrid when Enrique Morente sang <em>por sole\u00e1<\/em> to show me how easy it was to sing like <strong>Juan Talega<\/strong>. If I closed my eyes, I could easily picture Juan singing.<\/p>\n<p>That party with Tom\u00e1s in La Barqueta lasted until the morning hours, and Antonio told me that Tom\u00e1s sang that night like no one else he had ever heard before. When the time came to get paid, Tom\u00e1s said: \u201cI cannot charge anything to people with such good understanding of flamenco like you do, but Reyes won\u2019t have any money for tomorrow\u2019s stew\u201d. Reyes was his partner, <strong>Reyes Berm\u00fadez Camacho<\/strong>, daughter of <em>cantaor<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Antonio Berm\u00fadez\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>El Baboso<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That poor woman must have endured many hardships due to the eccentricities of Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n. Yet, she was very happy being by the side of that genius of <em>cante<\/em> who, realizing that he was about to die, told her: \u201cReyes, let get married so at least you can inherit my things and don\u2019t have any problems\u201d. So they got married with Tom\u00e1s agonizing in his deathbed.
