It also proves me right when I say that women weren\u2019t being neglected in the world of flamenco in those days, as it\u2019s stated often without any evidence. On May 20<sup>th<\/sup>, 1936, two months before the start of the Spanish Civil War, Madrid\u2019s <em>Ahora <\/em>newspaper mentioned a <strong>Conference Series of <em>Cante Jondo<\/em><\/strong> at the <strong>Liceo Andaluz<\/strong> in the Spanish capital. The series took place from May 21<sup>st<\/sup> to June 13<sup>th<\/sup>. There was a total of nine conferences, with speakers as renowned as <strong>Fernando el de Triana<\/strong>, who talked about \u201c<em>Bailes flamencos\u201d<\/em>, or the painter from Seville <strong>Jos\u00e9 Rico Cejudo<\/strong>, who gave a lecture about <em>Cante jondo grande <\/em>and <em>Cantes chico<\/em>s.<\/p>\n<p>The great composer from Seville <strong>Joaqu\u00edn Turina\u00a0<\/strong>(pictured above) also took part, speaking about <em>Cante jondo in cultured music<\/em>, with musical illustrations by <strong>Saint Saens<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Rimnsky Corsakof<\/strong>. The relationship between <em>cante jondo<\/em> and Arabic music could not be left out, with this topic being dealt with by the philologist and writer <strong>Isidro de las Cagigas<\/strong>. The influence of Sephardi music in 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century Andalusian songs was also explored. <strong>Manuel G\u00f3ngora<\/strong>\u00a0spoke about Gypsy dances and rhythmic dances. <strong>Jos\u00e9 Bellver Cano<\/strong>\u00a0talked about the guitar. And, oddly, doctor\u00a0<strong>Ban-Vaumber-ghem<\/strong>\u00a0spoke about <em>Women in poetry and Andalusian song<\/em>. They didn\u2019t forget the <em>cantaoras<\/em>, although there were no female speakers, certainly because it would not have been easy to find women willing to give flamenco lectures in those days. Oh, the difference between <em>cante jondo<\/em> and <em>cante flamenco<\/em> was also discussed, showing that this difference has always existed, although it\u2019s barely noticeable nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>See how things have not changed as much as we think nowadays? And that was not the first conference series about flamenco. <strong>Silverio Dom\u00ednguez Cano<\/strong>, son of <strong>Silverio Franconetti<\/strong>, already organized such conferences years earlier, at Seville\u2019s Tertulia El Arenal, which he directed. That\u2019s where Fernando el de Triana gave his first conference, using the material that would later become his famous book <em>Arte y artistas flamencos<\/em>. Later, he gave the same conference in Coria del R\u00edo, where <strong>Blas Infante<\/strong>\u00a0heard those recollections by Fernando and encouraged him to write the book, published in 1935.
