{"id":14403,"date":"2019-08-01T19:21:42","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T17:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=14403"},"modified":"2019-08-01T19:21:42","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T17:21:42","slug":"thoughtfulness-and-coherence-in-flamenco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/thoughtfulness-and-coherence-in-flamenco\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughtfulness and coherence in flamenco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve watched a screening of a documentary about <strong>Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/strong>, and it featured <strong>Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez<\/strong> and <strong>La Tremendita<\/strong>. Geez, this just gets worse and worse. I don\u2019t mean to say that they shouldn\u2019t be allowed to give her opinion about that <em>cantaor<\/em> from Puebla de Cazalla. It\u2019s just that they could have featured people better aligned with Menese\u2019s perspective. Can you imagine how Jos\u00e9 would feel about this? Yet, that\u2019s how things are. I can only shake my head when I see that a festival named after <strong>Juan Talega<\/strong>\u00a0features artists that have nothing to do with that lion of Dos Hermanas, such as <strong>Pitingo, Jos\u00e9 Gal\u00e1n<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Estrella Morente<\/strong>. Gal\u00e1n was a regular every year because that was the will of someone at City Council. They would not request Menese or\u00a0<strong>Rancapino<\/strong>\u00a0senior, but Jos\u00e9 Gal\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p>I feel the same way when I listen to imitators of <strong>Camar\u00f3n<\/strong> at the <em>Reuni\u00f3n de Cante Jondo de la Puebla de Cazalla<\/em>, a festival that has become totally sidetracked. I can only imagine how would poor <strong>Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n <\/strong>feel if he could raise his head and see all that. He would probably want to burn it all down. Well, he was a communist revolutionary. The only way to save what\u2019s left of authentic flamenco, which is not much, is with thoughtfulness and coherence. I\u2019ve often criticized <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong> for many things, always aiming to promote debate. I disagree with most of his philosophy, but at least he was coherent with his ideas, same as Francisco or Jos\u00e9 Menese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manuel Gerena<\/strong>\u00a0also features in the Menese documentary. They were two <em>cantaores<\/em> who could not stand each other since when they were teenagers. When I was gathering opinions for my book <em>La voz prohibida<\/em>, about Manuel Gerena, I asked Menese to tell me a few things, and he trashed him mercilessly. I could not use anything from that complicated and violent conversation with the <em>maestro<\/em> from Puebla de Cazalla.
