On Friday, July 19th, Jerez experienced an evening of visceral and committed cante by someone inspired by the land of Manuel Agujetas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Terremoto<\/strong>. That\u2019s the school followed by Alfonso Carpio Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>, son of\u00a0El Mijita<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014whose first name is also Alfonso \u2014, one of the great aficionados left in the city, the kind we can find any day of the week in parties or in gatherings of flamenco buffs singing good cante corto<\/em>. Very good cante<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In previous articles we talked about this great flamenco dynasty, one of the most prolific of our days with a consistently generous commitment to perform. That\u2019s also the case of Alfonso, of course, who hadn\u2019t released any solo album since Cantes de hoy y de siempre <\/em>in 1997. He later took part in albums with different format, such as in Estirpe. De pare a hijo<\/em>, where he recorded together with his father and brother Jos\u00e9 in 2015.<\/p>\n

Now when he\u2019s enjoying a solid maturity and the kind of knowledge of those who love this art and experience it to its full, he has released El Palacio de Cristal<\/em>, whose title evokes the birthplace of this cantaor<\/em>, Nueva street in the Santiago neighborhood. Although he\u2019s often regarded as one of the great cantaores from La Plazuela district, Alfonso states \u00abI\u2019m from Jerez, from both neighborhoods\u00bb. What is clear is that this Gypsy with a long tradition in this art is back in earnest, leaning on first-class guitarists such as maestro<\/em> Paco Cepero<\/strong>, who accompanies him in the seguiriya<\/em> and the tangos<\/em>. Diego del Morao<\/strong>\u00a0tucks him in the buler\u00edas<\/em>, while Manuel Parrilla<\/strong>\u00a0plays his guitar in the soleares<\/em> and the fandangos<\/em> and Jos\u00e9 G\u00e1lvez<\/strong>, who is in charge of most of the musical production, makes an appearance in the alegr\u00edas<\/em>, the buler\u00edas por sole\u00e1<\/em> and in other buler\u00edas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 G\u00e1lvez accompanied Mijita in the public presentation at Jerez\u2019s Alc\u00e1zar, within the Viernes Flamenco<\/em>\u00a0series organized by City Council, with artistic direction, in this case, by Pe\u00f1a Buena Gente<\/a>. He shared the evening with Pedro El Grana\u00edno, one of the cantaores<\/em> in highest demand these days, who shone since the moment he sat next to Diego Amaya<\/strong>. Yet, the truth is that the comeback of the local artist created great expectations. Faithful to his style, Alfonso showed his most authentic and Gypsy singing, being a traditional cantaor<\/em> who doesn\u2019t attempt to emulate anyone else, with a voice that conveys his experience and doesn\u2019t admit sound tweaks. Alfonso, like so many others from this city, past and present, crawls along the edge of a razor to move his audience with the firm goal of reclaiming his rightful place after many years off the stages. In this opportunity he was only accompanied by the guitar of Jos\u00e9 G\u00e1lvez, who greatly contributed to a convincing performance and the great acclaim praised on the comeback of this cantaor<\/em>. Palmas were by Jos\u00e9 Rubichi<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Carlos Grilo<\/strong>, and the choir\u2019s voices were by Fan\u00eda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sandra Zarzana<\/strong>, and\u00a0Tomasa Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>. Later, some members of his family joined the performance, such as his daughter Marta<\/strong>, who gifted her father with a baile por buler\u00edas<\/em>.<\/p>\n
