{"id":14239,"date":"2019-07-24T19:26:27","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T17:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=14239"},"modified":"2019-07-24T19:32:14","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T17:32:14","slug":"the-thorny-affair-of-the-key-of-cante-awarded-to-mairena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/the-thorny-affair-of-the-key-of-cante-awarded-to-mairena\/","title":{"rendered":"The thorny affair of the Key of Cante awarded to Mairena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few days ago, I posted in Facebook a photograph taken in C\u00f3rdoba, in 1962, shown above, where we can see <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong>\u00a0with the painter <strong>Capuleti<\/strong>, his brother <strong>Manolo, Tom\u00e1s Torre<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>El Cano<\/strong>, son of <strong>Juan Talega<\/strong>, among other artists and aficionados. Mairena had just been awarded the <strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> Golden Key of Cante<\/strong> in a contest that was nothing but a smokescreen, the <strong>3rd C\u00f3rdoba National Contest<\/strong>, as <strong>Ricardo Molina<\/strong>, the prestigious poet and flamencologist from Puente Genil, had arranged for it to be awarded to Mairena, whom, oddly, he had only met three or four years before, according to <strong>Fosforito<\/strong>, who introduced each other.<\/p>\n<p>This <em>maestro<\/em> from C\u00f3rdoba said that when he talked to Molina about Mairena, the former thought that Fosforito meant <strong>Pepe Mairena<\/strong>, the one wo sang <em>Ovejita lucera<\/em>. So, he didn\u2019t have a clue who Antonio Mairena was, because in the late 1950s he had different tastes in <em>cante<\/em>. Ricardo himself wrote in 1958 that a doctor who was his friend, <strong>Justo Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, had mentioned Mairena to him, but that was six or seven years before Fosforito introduced them, so there\u2019s something amiss. The truth is that Ricardo Molina fell in love with Mairena\u2019s <em>cante<\/em> and referred to him as \u201cthe deepest and most faithful performer of <em>cante jondo<\/em>\u201d. That was in the late 1950s, when artists such as <strong>Pepe Marchena, Manolo Caracol, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Pepe Pinto<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Juan Varea<\/strong>, among others, were still alive.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that Molina started working to promote the career of Antonio Mairena and he came up with the idea of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Golden Key of Cante to award it to him. Yet, how could he award the Key to a <em>cantaor<\/em> who at the time was not a big star of cante, and who wasn\u2019t even universally liked? That\u2019s when he proposed the C\u00f3rdoba City Council to award it during the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> <em>Concurso Nacional de Cante Flamenco<\/em>. The contest rules were written down, and it was open to all <em>cantaores<\/em>, professional or aficionados. Many aficionados performed in the selection phase, but the professionals didn\u2019t need to go through a selection process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antonio el Chocolate<\/strong>\u00a0was one of the <em>cantaores<\/em> who competed with Mairena, but that was just because he was told to by his agent <strong>Jes\u00fas Antonio Pulp\u00f3n<\/strong>, who hired him for 25,000 pesetas (roughly 250 euros), as he himself admitted: \u201cI cashed my money and stayed quiet, because I knew the whole thing was for Antonio\u201d. Fosforito also knew it: \u201cI was called by the City Council, hired for twenty-five thousand pesetas, and Antonio performed for free because it was all arranged\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing all this, just a few notes, it\u2019s logical to think, and say, that Ricardo Molina and the other organizers came up with the <em>Concurso Nacional de C\u00f3rdoba<\/em> as a pretext to award Mairena the Key. It\u2019s hard to write about this topic without getting in trouble with the <em>mairenistas<\/em>, as it has happened to me in the last thirty-five years. I have said many good things about this great <em>cantaor<\/em>, but the <em>mairenistas<\/em> only speak up if I say anything they consider negative. Why is telling the truth \u201cnegative\u201d, when the truth is that Ricardo Molina arranged everything so the Key would be awarded to his intimate friend and admired <em>cantaor<\/em>? He could have awarded it to Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, who had already been honored in C\u00f3rdoba in 1961, but he didn\u2019t. He picked Mairena so <em>cante<\/em> would take off following his school, traditional <em>cante<\/em>, and it worked because this <em>maestro<\/em> from Mairena initiated a new era in <em>cante jondo<\/em> or <em>cante<\/em> <em>gitano-andaluz<\/em>, as he called it. Antonio became the leading star for over twenty years, from 1962 until his death in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>How was Antonio\u2019s performance in that contest? His brother Curro admitted that he sang well, although not as well as in other occasions. Other <em>cantaores<\/em> were more liked, such as Fosforito and <strong>Platero de Alcal\u00e1<\/strong>, but the contest rules demanded performing styles of <em>cante <\/em>that very few <em>cantaores<\/em> were familiar with. Antonio Mairena may have had a hand in the requirement to perform certain styles of <em>seguiriyas, ton\u00e1s<\/em> and <em>soleares<\/em>, as it was confirmed to me by the <em>cantaor<\/em> and flamencologist from C\u00e1diz <strong>Am\u00f3s Rodr\u00edguez Rey<\/strong>, who exchanged correspondence with Ricardo Molina, whose some of his letters are now in my archive.<\/p>\n<p>Everything is questionable, and the legacy of Antonio Mairena can also be questioned. Even his singing style. The legacies of <strong>Chac\u00f3n<\/strong>, Marchena and Valderrama are questioned, so why not Mairena\u2019s? Yet, there is something unquestionable: that <strong>Antonio Cruz Garc\u00eda<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Mairena<\/em>, was a superb <em>cantaor<\/em> and an aficionado with an immeasurable passion for <em>cante flamenco<\/em>. I like a lot Mairena, the <em>cantaor<\/em>, but not much Mairena, the flamencologist. I promise to dig further in his legacy as <em>cantaor<\/em>, if that\u2019s even possible, and not dwelling so much into his other legacy, which I consider disastrous for being so manipulative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
