(III)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why do we have to believe that <strong>Jos\u00e9 Lorente<\/strong>\u00a0actually created the <em>sole\u00e1<\/em> attributed to him? He was mainly a <em>cantaor para baile<\/em>, who often sang for <strong>La Campanera<\/strong>\u00a0together with\u00a0<strong>Sartorio<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 who was a <em>cantaor<\/em> and also a <em>bolero<\/em> dancer \u2014, <strong>Silverio, Enrique Prado<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Juraco<\/strong>\u00a0from Alcal\u00e1 de los Panaderos. He also sang for <strong>Antonio P\u00e1ez\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>El Pintor<\/strong><\/em>, from San Juan de la Palma. Since he died young, just 36 years old, I suppose this helped to make him known due to his very unique way of singing. I believe that artists are only remembered after their pass away if there\u2019s a good reason for it, so Lorente would have to have been a good cantaor.<\/p>\n<p>He was from Silverio\u2019s school, and eleven years his junior. That is, when Lorente started to sing professionally and he was around twenty years old, Silverio already had some renown and was considered a flamenco star. Let\u2019s not forget that when Silverio returned from South America in 1864, he was referred as \u201cthe celebrated Silverio\u201d, which clearly tells us two things: that he was already famous when he travelled overseas as bullfighter assistant, in 1857, and that his name hadn\u2019t been forgotten when he came back.<\/p>\n<p>There are two <em>soleares <\/em>that have always been attributed to Lorente: <em>La noche del terremoto<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Se hundi\u00f3 la Babilonia<\/em>. <strong>Juan Valderrama<\/strong>\u00a0often performed the latter and he would occasionally mention Lorente, certainly due to the influence of Pepe Marchena, who talked about this <em>cantaor<\/em> from La Feria district in his lecture at the University of Seville in 1972. Before <strong>Marchena<\/strong>, Valderrama and\u00a0<strong>Matrona<\/strong>, there was one <em>cantaora<\/em> from M\u00e1laga, <strong>La Juanaca<\/strong>, who popularized and kept alive Lorente\u2019s <em>soleares<\/em>, according to <strong>Fernando el de Triana<\/strong>. His cante often has been used as a <em>remate<\/em> (finale) in ca\u00f1as, that\u2019s why we also hear about a <em>ca\u00f1a de Lorente<\/em>, like we also hear about the <em>ca\u00f1as<\/em> of <strong>El Fillo, Curro Pabla, Curro Durse, Enrique Ortega<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>El Grana\u00edno<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All of this would have to be explained with greater detail, but here\u2019s not the place for it. Lorente may have created his own <em>cantes<\/em> or a personal style in <em>ca\u00f1as <\/em>and <em>soleares<\/em>, such as was the case with <strong>El Nitri, El Marrurro<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>La Sarneta<\/strong>. There may have been some truth about this, since it\u2019s what\u2019s has been said until our days. If those two <em>soleares<\/em> attributed to him were really his, Lorente would have to have been an amazing cantaor, with a mighty voice and an impressive skill at linking verses, certainly in the style of the schools of Triana, of <strong>Frasco el Colorao<\/strong>\u00a0and of\u00a0<strong>Ram\u00f3n El Ollero<\/strong>. Indeed, El Ollero was a neighbor of Lorente in the La Feria district for many years, so they must have known each other.<\/p>\n<p>Summarizing, the intent was to find out who Lorente was, where he was from, where he travelled in his short life, and when he died. His name was <strong>Jos\u00e9 Lorente Lora<\/strong>, and he was born on April 27<sup>th<\/sup>, 1842, on number 6 Ropavieja Street, now called Antonio Susillo Street, in Seville\u2019s La Feria district. He was the son of <strong>Antonio Lorente Jim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, from Portugal and a wool dealer by trade, and of <strong>Mar\u00eda Lora Tesoro<\/strong>, from Fuentes de la Campana, now called Fuentes de Andaluc\u00eda. He was the grandson, on his father side, of <strong>Francisco Lorente<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Francisca Jim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, both from Seville, and, on his mother side, of\u00a0<strong>Sebasti\u00e1n Lora <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Juan Tesoro<\/strong>, from Fuentes de Andaluc\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>He was married on May 17<sup>th<\/sup>, 1863 with <strong>Matilde Tejera Hinojosa<\/strong>, from Seville, at this city\u2019s Omnium Sanctorum parish.
