(II)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Read here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/bordonazo\/quien-era-jose-lorente\">part one<\/a> of this article.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In a little-known book by <strong>\u00c1ngel Vela Nieto<\/strong><em>, Triana, la otra orilla del flamenco\u00a0<\/em>(2013)<strong>, <\/strong>it\u2019s stated as a given that<strong> Jos\u00e9 Lorente<\/strong>\u00a0was born in that neighborhood, Triana, but it looks like this was not the case. It is a fact that Triana has always been linked to this <em>cantaor<\/em> from the province of Seville, perhaps due to the lyrics of a well-known <em>sole\u00e1 apol\u00e1<\/em> attributed to him:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>El d\u00eda del terremoto,<br \/>\nlleg\u00f3 el ag\u00fcita hasta arriba<br \/>\npero no pudo llegar<br \/>\ndonde lleg\u00f3 mi fatiga.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><font size=2>The day of the earthquake<br \/>\nThe water rose up<br \/>\nBut it wasn&#8217;t as high<br \/>\nAs my suffering was<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n<p>These lyrics refer to the 1755 Lisbon earthquake which so much damage inflicted upon the Portuguese capital, with seven or eight thousand people killed, leaving the city almost completely destroyed. Oddly, Lorente had Portuguese ancestry. It\u2019s just a curiosity, but there\u2019s the information. He also had ancestry from Fuentes de Andaluc\u00eda, a town thirty miles east of Seville, which was called Fuentes de la Campana when this <em>cantaor<\/em> was born in 1842. This town, incidentally, didn\u2019t have much flamenco tradition, although <strong>Ni\u00f1o de Fuentes de Andaluc\u00eda<\/strong>\u00a0was renowned in the days of the <em>\u00f3pera flamenca<\/em>. In that town, another <em>Ni\u00f1o<\/em> performed for the first time, <strong>Ni\u00f1o de Marchena<\/strong>, who always referred to Lorente as an important <em>cantaor<\/em>, creator of a <em>sole\u00e1<\/em> he often performed, along with his <em>ca\u00f1a<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To figure out who exactly was Lorente, it was necessary to do a lot of research in the newspapers and census of Seville. There were four our five people with the first name Jos\u00e9 and surname Lorente. Yet I was able to discard most of the others and I settled for one Jos\u00e9 Lorente who had been born in La Feria district, near Alameda de H\u00e9rcules, on Antonio Susillo Street, where <strong>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Gregorio Ju\u00e1rez Monge<\/strong> (the maternal grandfather of\u00a0<strong>Manolo Caracol<\/strong>) also lived. That street goes from Torres Street to La Alameda, ending at Peral Street, where Lorente died in 1877 of pulmonary tuberculosis, when he was just 36 years old. On that street, Peral, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines also lived, and <strong>Rafael Pareja<\/strong>\u00a0had a well-known <em>tabanco flamenco<\/em> there, too. We are talking about the area in Seville with the most flamenco tradition, with my apologies to Triana. The districts of La Feria, San Juan de la Palma and Alameda de H\u00e9rcules produced an amount of flamenco artists only comparable with Jerez or C\u00e1diz. <strong>Manuel de la Barrera, Antonio el Pintor<\/strong>, his son\u00a0<strong>Lamparilla<\/strong>, <strong>Maestro P\u00e9rez<\/strong>\u00a0and his children,\u00a0<strong>El Ciego<\/strong>\u00a0and his daughters, <strong>Manolo Escacena, Amalia Molina, Fernando el de Triana, Fa\u00edco, Manuel Vallejo<\/strong>\u00a0and a very long etcetera make this area seem like a veritable flamenco orchard. And yet, few people in Seville are aware of it.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Lorente showed up in Silverio\u2019s company together the guitarist Antonio P\u00e9rez and the bailaor Antonio P\u00e1ez\u00a0<em>El Pintor<\/em>\u00a0made me think that he could be from the La Feria district. He was from their same generation and his address was always near Maestro P\u00e9rez, with whom he already worked in the early 1860s at the academies of <strong>Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Miguel de la Barrera<\/strong>. It was necessary to confirm that this individual didn\u2019t perform anywhere after 1877, the year when Lorente died, and I haven\u2019t found any performance linked to this individual after this date. If any post-1877 performance record shows up one day, it would not be the same Jos\u00e9 Lorente I have as the mythical <em>cantaor<\/em>.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s difficult to identify a <em>cantaor <\/em>from those days because official documents would not list their occupation as artist. That was the case of Lorente, who is recorded as shoemaker, his true occupation.<\/p>\n<p>Another hint that suggested I was in the right track with this particular Jos\u00e9 Lorente was that he also showed up living near Francisco Arana Cuesta,\u00a0<strong>El Cuervo Sanluque\u00f1o<\/strong>, also known as Paco el Sanluque\u00f1o. This artist also was part of Silverio\u2019s company, together with Lorente, and he lived on Palomas Street having as neighbors <strong>Ram\u00f3n el Ollero<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Antonio Frijones<\/strong>, from Jerez.
