{"id":13868,"date":"2019-07-11T19:25:20","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T17:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=13868"},"modified":"2019-07-11T19:30:09","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T17:30:09","slug":"were-silverio-and-el-nitri-rivals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/were-silverio-and-el-nitri-rivals\/","title":{"rendered":"Were Silverio and El Nitri rivals?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few days ago, <strong>Alberto Rodr\u00edguez Pe\u00f1afuerte<\/strong>, author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/flamencodepapel.blogspot.com\/\"><em>Flamenco de papel<\/em><\/a> blog, published a letter sent by Silverio to a newspaper in 1872, replying to a sort of challenge that someone proposed, asking him to compete with one <strong>Tom\u00e1s Ortega <\/strong>who, as we made clear a long time ago, was Tom\u00e1s Ortega L\u00f3pez\u00a0<em><strong>El Nitri<\/strong><\/em>, the celebrate Gypsy <em>cantaor<\/em> from Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda. It\u2019s an extraordinary document, as it confirms the reported rivalry between this <em>cantaor<\/em> and Silverio, although it seems they never sang together, according to the oral tradition.<\/p>\n<p>I do believe that both had listened to each other sing, and that\u2019s why Silverio puts him down so ruthlessly in this letter, hinting that such challenge was not possible because El Nitri was not at his level. I think that El Nitri was a good <em>cantaor<\/em>, considering all that has been said about him, but he never was as important as the <em>cantaor<\/em> from Seville, so a true rivalry couldn\u2019t exist, and it\u2019s understandable that Silverio wouldn\u2019t like to compare himself with someone he considered to be of an inferior artistic merit. The rivalry was really between <em>cante gitano<\/em> and <em>cante andaluz<\/em>, a rivalry that existed, still exists today and will always exist, even as nowadays there\u2019s barely any difference between these two schools.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think that Tom\u00e1s El Nitri ever questioned Silverio as <em>cantaor<\/em>, among other things because they belonged to the same school. And he would not question a <em>cantaor<\/em> admired by Gypsy masters such as his own uncle <strong>El Fillo, Manuel Molina, Curro Durse, Mezcle de Sanl\u00facar<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Ortegas<\/strong>\u00a0from C\u00e1diz, father and sons, particularly <strong>Enrique<\/strong>. What Tom\u00e1s may have questioned was the fact that Silverio commercialized <em>cante gitano<\/em>, which is something he was many times accused of. Indeed, there is no evidence that this <em>cantaor<\/em> from Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda ever sang in a caf\u00e9, certainly none owned by the master from Seville.<\/p>\n<p>I remember that <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong>\u00a0once told me about the supposed rivalry between <strong>Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/strong>\u00a0and his brother Manuel. Manuel was jealous of Menese, who was like the favourite child of Antonio, and he felt hurt because he considered himself to be the foremost disciple of Mairena and a die-hard follower of his style. Something similar may have happened between El Nitri and Silverio. Tom\u00e1s was a nephew of Antonio Ortega Heredia\u00a0<em>El Fillo<\/em>, son of his brother Andr\u00e9s, so he would be a follower of his style. Yet, El Fillo discovered that a non-Gypsy from Seville who had grown up in Mor\u00f3n, Silverio, also followed his school and he defended him tooth and nail. This admiration of the master for his disciple may have made El Nitri jealous of the <em>cantaor<\/em> from Seville.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abI don\u2019t think that there was a true rivalry between Silverio and Tom\u00e1s, as it would be like saying today that there is a rivalry between El \u00c1lvarez, from M\u00e1laga, and Fosforito\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some admirers of Tom\u00e1s decided to take a photograph of him in a party with a key in his hand, to sort of suggest that he was the lord of <em>cante gitano<\/em>. This party took place in M\u00e1laga, according to some witnesses, although Antonio Mairena always said this happened in Carmona, in the house of <strong>T\u00edo Maero<\/strong>. It\u2019s not easy to document this story, although I\u2019m inclined to think it was in M\u00e1laga, because at that time, in the 1860s, El Fillo <em>hijo<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Francisco Ortega Vargas<\/strong>, was living with <strong>Mar\u00eda la Andonda<\/strong> in that city of Andalusia. Even as we\u2019ve been unable to confirm that El Nitri also lived there, it\u2019s very likely, because at the time M\u00e1laga was a paradise for blacksmiths.<\/p>\n<p>Taking advantage of the fact that Silverio was in South America, some followers of Tom\u00e1s decided to award him a key which, reportedly, was provided by <strong>El Planeta<\/strong>, according to <strong>Jos\u00e9 Carlos de Luna<\/strong>, writer from M\u00e1laga. This El Planeta was not the famous <em>cantaor<\/em> from C\u00e1diz, as he had passed away in 1856, when El Nitri was still a teenager. It would have been either his eldest so, also known as El Planeta, or his other son Tom\u00e1s, who wanted to be a bullfighter but became a wealthy butcher instead. That\u2019s what I think, because I have done a lot of research in M\u00e1laga, particularly regarding Tom\u00e1s El Nitri, as everyone knows.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think that there was a true rivalry between Silverio and Tom\u00e1s, as it would be like saying today that there is a rivalry between <strong>El \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>, from M\u00e1laga, and <strong>Fosforito<\/strong>. Tom\u00e1s only performed in parties, while Silverio was the great star of his time, a true professional of <em>cante<\/em>, an artist and renowned entrepreneur of caf\u00e9s and companies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
