{"id":13581,"date":"2019-07-01T18:41:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T16:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=13581"},"modified":"2019-07-01T18:44:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-01T16:44:00","slug":"cheers-for-juan-villar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/cheers-for-juan-villar\/","title":{"rendered":"Cheers for Juan Villar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first time I listened to <strong>Juan Villar<\/strong> sing, in the late 1970s, I knew at once that he would cause a big stir in the festivals, and that was the case. He was a new voice, with roots in the most traditional flamenco of C\u00e1diz. Even as there were thirty or forty major stars of <em>cante<\/em> when he started to become popular, Juan managed to stand out in the summer festivals of southern Spain, singing <em>por buler\u00edas<\/em> like it had seldom been done before, having a unique style and uncommon depth. I remember that one of those evenings when he sang superbly, <strong>Camar\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0told the agent <strong>Jes\u00fas Antonio Pulp\u00f3n<\/strong>: \u201cI wonder what I\u2019m going to do now\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Juan not only stood out in <em>buler\u00edas<\/em>, but also in <em>alegr\u00edas<\/em>, <em>tientos<\/em> and in the <em>soleares<\/em> of C\u00e1diz. He would do incredible things <em>por sole\u00e1<\/em> sometimes, <em>cantes<\/em> drenched in flamenco feel. He also sang for <em>baile<\/em> in a way that has seldom been acknowledged. The first time I listened to him sing for <em>baile <\/em>was for <strong>Manuela Carrasco<\/strong>, and I don\u2019t recall ever having seen the Goddess of Gypsy <em>baile<\/em> dance so well. Back then, Juan had an unmatched strength and sense of rhythm (<em>comp\u00e1s<\/em>). Farruco used to say that Juan was able to get <em>comp\u00e1s<\/em> inside people\u2019s innards.<\/p>\n<p>C\u00e1diz has given flamenco so much, so many great things \u2014 it\u2019s a pity that the authorities don\u2019t really care about this \u2014 that each street and each square should be named after some flamenco star: <strong>El Planeta, L\u00e1zaro Quintana, La Mejorana, Enrique and Gabriela Ortega, El Raspao, El Mellizo, Pati\u00f1o, Fosforito, El Caoba, Aurelio Sell\u00e9s, Manolo Vargas, La Perla, Chano Lobato, Juan Villar<\/strong>\u2026 Not to mention other cities in the province of C\u00e1diz, such as Jerez, El Puerto, Puerto Real, Sanl\u00facar or Algeciras. Juan Jos\u00e9 Villar Jim\u00e9nez, the full name of this master of the <em>cante<\/em> of C\u00e1diz, is among the most renowned flamenco artists and his voice is etched with fire in the history of <em>cante<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I celebrate the fact that on July 6<sup>th<\/sup> he will be honored in the town of Conil (C\u00e1diz province) in a festival \u2014 the <strong>Festival Flamenco At\u00fan Rojo de Almadraba<\/strong>\u2014 which seems to have become well-established with just two editions (including the upcoming one on Saturday). While last year <em>maestro<\/em> <strong>Rancapino<\/strong> was honored, this year is the turn of Juan Villar.
