The potters would sing in their spare time in the taverns, usually without guitar, keeping the rhythm by knocking on a table or the bar\u2019s counter, with their bare knuckles. I\u2019m sure they managed to fit the verses in, just fine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-But did they sing <em>a comp\u00e1s <\/em>or not, grandpa?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-They had their own way to measure the verses, and they weren\u2019t virtuosos, not at all. I mean those who left recordings behind, such as Emilio Abad\u00eda, Manuel Oliver, El Teta, Manolito el Pintor, Domingo el Alfarero and El Arenero. They didn\u2019t have a keen sense of rhythm. Yet, Pastora Pav\u00f3n recorded those <em>cantes <\/em>with a perfect rhythm. Same with Mairena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Pastora?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, kid. Pastora. &#8220;<em>Con la tierra ech\u00e1 en la cara<\/em>&#8220;, that\u2019s a <em>cante del Zurraque<\/em>, not a <em>cante de La Cava<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Weird, huh?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Not weird at all, because the Pav\u00f3n family lived on Castilla Street, same Street as Garf\u00edas, who was a master of these <em>cantes<\/em>, those of Ram\u00f3n el Ollero, El Pancho, La G\u00f3mez and El Quino Lorente. Also, part of Pastora\u2019s family lived in Triana, so she would have heard those cantes many times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-In Triana people say that Antonio Mairena didn\u2019t sing those cantes well, what do you say about this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Nonsense.He sang them well, and <em>a comp\u00e1s<\/em>, particularly the styles of Noriega and Pinea el Zapatero, two aficionados of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Yet he wouldn\u2019t have the feel, the <em>dejillo<\/em>, of Zurraque, grandpa. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-That\u2019s something else, because he wasn\u2019t from Zurraque. Just as one singer from Triana cannot have the <em>dejillo <\/em>of Alosno, when singing a <em>fandango de Alosno<\/em>, if you know what I mean. Yet we are talking about singing well, not about perfumes and aromas, which are two different things<\/p>\n<p><strong>-What about Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Tom\u00e1s <em>cante<\/em> was more like what they sing in C\u00e1diz, he liked the \u201clong\u201d style of El Mellizo, and Frijone\u2019s <em>tirao<\/em>. He also recorded the <em>cantes de Alcal\u00e1 <\/em>in his own way, extending and linking the verses. His father-in-law, Antonio Berm\u00fadez <em>El Baboso<\/em>,<em> cantaor<\/em>, could have taught him some cantes, although there isn\u2019t any proof of that. I\u2019m on it, trying to figure out how well Tomasito and his father-in-law knew each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-They also say that Tom\u00e1s didn\u2019t sing well the <em>cante de Alcal\u00e1<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Nonsense.The thing is that Tom\u00e1s would extend the verses, because he could, and the <em>cante de Alcal\u00e1 <\/em>is short, as performed by Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula, a singer that apparently didn\u2019t have much breath. He also sang out of tune, because he was a bit deaf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-But Joaquin created at least four <em>cantes<\/em>, right? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-According to his son Enrique, who sang <em>sole\u00e1s<\/em> very well, his father only created one<em> cante<\/em>. If his son said that, that\u2019s probably true, because Enriquillo knew a lot about <em>cante<\/em>. The remaining styles of Alac\u00e1 were created by other people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Didn\u2019t Juraco had his own style of <em>sole\u00e1<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Certainly. Even La Roesna, who only sang in her own home, had her own style of <em>sole\u00e1<\/em>. So much so Juraco, an artist, a musician who was admired even by Silverio Franconetti. Saying otherwise is rubbish. The thing is that Mairena said that all the styles of soleares from Alcal\u00e1 were traditional Gypsy styles, and no one contradicts Mairena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-So, to conclude, who polished the potter\u2019s cante?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Well, to be fair, those styles began to reach the general public when they were sung by Naranjito, Chiquetete and Paco Taranto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Chiquetete, grandpa? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, Antonio Cort\u00e9s Pantoja <em>Chiquetete<\/em>. He recorded these <em>cantes<\/em>, and that\u2019s when many other <em>cantaores<\/em> got interested in them. Yet I think that it has been Paco Taranto who has done these <em>cantes<\/em> really well, with that unique style of his. Remember that he is the only famous <em>cantaor<\/em> who was actually born in Zurraque, and he would have listened to all these cantes in the tavern of Joaquinito Ballesteros and other taverns in the neighborhood. But the first one to make those <em>cantes<\/em> known was Ramoncito el Ollero, born in the middle of the 19th century. He sang in the caf\u00e9s and parties of Seville, and it was him who made known these cantes outside of Triana. Yet, there isn\u2019t even a plaque to his memory on the house he was born, on Procurador Street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-I never cease to be amazed by how much you know about <em>cante<\/em>, grandpa.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-I know a lot because I\u2019ve lived a lot. I\u2019m just old. Cante is my life, don\u2019t you ever forget this.
