{"id":13406,"date":"2019-06-23T21:28:42","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T19:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=13406"},"modified":"2019-06-23T22:27:56","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T20:27:56","slug":"whats-the-matter-with-flamenco-in-cadiz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/whats-the-matter-with-flamenco-in-cadiz\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s the matter with flamenco in C\u00e1diz?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to what I read and hear, I can\u2019t help wondering, what\u2019s the matter with flamenco in C\u00e1diz? There is a lot of art and comp\u00e1s in there, loads of charm and great artists too, but what about the history of the <em>arte jondo<\/em> in that land, which is perhaps flamenco\u2019s main cradle? C\u00e1diz is the oldest town of Western civilization, with over three thousand years of history. In the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, there were already print-outs of villancicos sung on Christmas Eve in the Cathedral of C\u00e1diz, and the first <em>cantaores<\/em> recorded in history were from that city. The first known star of flamenco, <strong>Antonio Monge Rivero <\/strong><em><strong>El Planeta<\/strong>,<\/em>was born in C\u00e1diz in 1790, having been baptized in the San Lorenzo parish. Twelve years later (1802), his nephew <strong>L\u00e1zaro Quintana Monge<\/strong> (son of El Planeta\u2019s sister, Dolores), was one if the first <em>cantaores<\/em> to sing in the theaters of C\u00e1diz and Madrid. Yet, many centuries before that, <strong>Pliny the Elder<\/strong>, the Roman author, naturalist and military commander, was already writing about C\u00e1diz \u201csorrowful throats whispering songs and agonizing guitars\u201d, not to mention the classical poets <strong>Martial and Juvenal<\/strong>, who described C\u00e1diz songs and dances in Roman times, which weren\u2019t Roman but Andalusian, unique to C\u00e1diz, apparently.<\/p>\n<p>In San Fernando were born <strong>Antonio Ortega <em>El Fillo <\/em><\/strong>and <strong>Ram\u00f3n Sartorio<\/strong>, two important historical personalities of cante, and in Puerto Real was born <strong>Frasco El Colorao<\/strong>, a <em>cantaor<\/em> who was crucial in taking the seguiriyas of C\u00e1diz to Triana, where he died, more than eighty years old, leaving a lasting legacy there. If we start talking about Jerez, we would never end, and the same goes for Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda, the land of <strong>Juan el Cag\u00f3n<\/strong>, <strong>Jos\u00e9 Perea<\/strong> and <strong>Tom\u00e1s el Nitri<\/strong>, without forgetting <strong>Las Coquineras<\/strong>, three sisters who revolutionized baile in 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century Seville, two of whom died in Madrid, and the other dying in Seville more than a hundred years ago.<\/p>\n<p>How is it possible that C\u00e1diz\u2019s huge cultural legacy isn\u2019t properly taken care of? Worth of praise is the research work of <strong>Javier Osuna<\/strong> and <strong>Antonio Barber\u00e1n<\/strong>, and also <strong>Faustino N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/strong>, to whom C\u00e1diz owes more support and attention, but much more can still be done, and that depends on the public institutions, which are extremely stingy with our art, today recognized and admired the world over. Antonio Barber\u00e1n is constantly knocking on doors, looking for help, but it should be the other way around. The pubic institutions should be knocking the door of the Faculty of Flamencology in C\u00e1diz, asking what they can do for flamenco and for C\u00e1diz. For example, providing financial support, which would be essential to undertake the extremely important task of creating a big documentation center focusing on this province\u2019s flamenco, which is crucial, I\u2019d say vital in the formation of the <em>arte jondo<\/em>. Nothing is done in Seville either, other of the main cradles of this art, a city where we\u2019ve been for decades almost begging on our knees trying to make the authorities take care of the city\u2019s flamenco legacy, its history and its creators. <strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo<\/strong> has had to ask for help in the social networks to be able to publish La Valiente, a biography of<strong> La Cuenca<\/strong>, the most universal <em>bailaora<\/em> of M\u00e1laga, a book which will be soon released in that city. Which by the way, is the city where El Planeta spent the last twenty years of his life, a base from where he traveled all across Andalusia, showcasing the <em>cante<\/em> of C\u00e1diz. In M\u00e1laga also lived L\u00e1zaro Quintana, Tom\u00e1s el Nitri, <strong>Silverio Franconetti<\/strong> (who married there in 1868), el Fillo (son) and <strong>Mar\u00eda la Andonda<\/strong>, which is something the city was completely unaware of, until a few years ago. Now they know it, but they don\u2019t seem to care, because they\u2019re busy with other matters.<\/p>\n<p>Is there any region in the world more inconsiderate than Andalusia? I don\u2019t think so, although all countries have their problems, for sure.
