Perhaps they never left at all, but the prevailing performing formats in the last few years have sidelined those artists so beloved by aficionados. The older among us would remember those evenings of art when <strong>Miguel \u2018El Funi\u2019 <\/strong>displayed his bullfighting-style baile in the stages of de Lebrija, Utrera, Mor\u00f3n or Seville. Another of those great artists was <strong>Paco Valdepe\u00f1as<\/strong>, whose arm movements would delight the most demanding spectator. It was like a <em>media ver\u00f3nica<\/em> of Curro or Paula. Like those performed by <strong>Anzonini del Puerto<\/strong>, who was \u201cnot exactly a flamenco singer, nor precisely a dancer, but both\u201d, as our colleague <strong>Estela Zatania <\/strong>would put it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Art is the foundation. Knowing how to be, and the moment of \u2018pellizco\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s something unique which has no comparison with most of those making a living off flamenco. It\u2019s not that they\u2019re better, or worse, but they\u2019re certainly different. Those were the days when flamenco festivals lasted a long time, so a performance by some of these <em>festeros<\/em> would energize the evenings and cheer up the public. Generally, those restless artists would steer away from the deepest and more dramatic <em>cantes<\/em> such as <em>seguiriyas<\/em> or <em>martinetes<\/em>, preferring <em>sole\u00e1s por buler\u00edas<\/em> or <em>tangos<\/em>. That doesn\u2019t mean they were unable to master other <em>palos<\/em> of flamenco. Sometimes those artists would only be invited to perform in the <em>fin de fiesta<\/em> to put the icing on the cake. Or <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong>\u00a0would surround himself in some of his performances by old <em>bailaoras<\/em> such as <strong>T\u00eda Juana la del Pipa<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Luisa \u2018La Torr\u00e1n\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0to fully enjoy the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Now there seems to be a rekindled interest in these types of artists, with lineups now including the names of those who recapture this tradition, such as <strong>Perico \u2018El Pa\u00f1ero\u2019<\/strong>, who keeps a good balance between joyful partying and those sad <em>cantes de fragua<\/em>, or his brother <strong>Jos\u00e9<\/strong>, totally nocturnal and always willing to perform. <strong>Luis Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Javier Heredia<\/strong>, who learned from old <em>flamencos<\/em> in late nights and early mornings, and <strong>Juanfr\u00e1n Carrasco<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Alonso \u2018El Purili\u2019<\/strong>, the youngest. Women like <strong>Remedios Reyes<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Mari Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>, who remind us of <strong>Juana la del Revuelo<\/strong>\u00a0or the personalities of <strong>Mar\u00eda \u2018La Burra\u2019, Mar\u00eda Sole\u00e1<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Adela \u2018La Chaqueta\u2019<\/strong>. And also <strong>Ca\u00f1eta de M\u00e1laga<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Aurora Vargas<\/strong>, the latter more active than the former, who has been sidelined by event organizers even as she was one of the greatest flamenco artists of the second half of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago, Bilbao\u2019s Flamenco BBK series ended with the show <em>Flamenco de Fiesta<\/em>, a kind, elegant and very moving production with a simple plot. It was moving to find in that celebration the truths of flamenco in its most deeply-rooted partaking culture. Perico couldn\u2019t miss it, and the same goes for the accomplished <em>jerezana<\/em> <strong>Gema Moneo<\/strong>, <strong>Paco Vega<\/strong>, from Triana, who possess that elegance of Gypsy <em>baile por buler\u00edas<\/em> in his very self, or <strong>Antonio \u2018El Marsell\u00e9s\u2019<\/strong>. Whoever has enjoyed a night of partying in any of the well-known cradles of cante, or even in Madrid\u2019s bohemian hours, knows that El Marsell\u00e9s is the life of the party<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>If he\u2019s there, there\u2019s cante and baile. There\u2019s also harmony and style.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The videos of this performance in Bilbao have spread like wildfire in the social networks. It\u2019s an easy-to-understand format, as it\u2019s relatable and pleasant. People can see artists simultaneously singing and dancing in an understandable artistic discourse and, above all, having a good time. Is that simple. Many people who only attend flamenco shows now and then appreciate how pleasant these kind of performances are, in contrast with festivals that start at 10 PM and end at 4 AM. Short and sweet.
