{"id":13235,"date":"2019-06-17T23:02:20","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T21:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=13235"},"modified":"2019-06-17T23:05:44","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T21:05:44","slug":"la-leyenda-del-tiempo-forty-years-of-renewal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/actualidad-en\/la-leyenda-del-tiempo-forty-years-of-renewal\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018La Leyenda del Tiempo\u2019: forty years of renewal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, June 16th, 2019, it\u2019s the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the release of one of the most controversial and, at the same time, essential, albums in the history of flamenco music, <strong><em>La Leyenda del Tiempo<\/em><\/strong>, by <strong>Camar\u00f3n de la Isla<\/strong>, which had the collaboration of many other great names in Andalusian music, something that\u2019s fair pointing out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Monge Cruz<\/strong>, a.k.a. <em>Camar\u00f3n de la Isla<\/em>, was a natural genius, but he wouldn\u2019t have been able to create an album of such magnitude all by himself. <em>Cante<\/em> was in its heyday, with <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong> still alive and ruling without hesitation. Stars like <strong>Juan el Lebrijano, Fosforito, Chocolate, Morente, La Paquera, Jos\u00e9 Menese<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Manuel Agujetas<\/strong>\u00a0drew multitudes to the summer festivals, releasing records of traditional <em>cante<\/em> and also albums with a more innovative bent, particularly those by Morente and Lebrijano. In that precise moment of very meaningful changes, producer <strong>Ricardo Pach\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0decided to tighten the screw of flamenco music by doing something risky but perhaps necessary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>An album which would open a new era in cante. Not traditional cante, but innovative cante.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Besides, he selected the best voice in those days, the voice of a <em>cantao<\/em>r from San Fernando who was already a living legend, Camar\u00f3n. That genius had little to gain and a lot to lose by joining this project, because the world of <em>cante<\/em> was like a dictatorship, with its dictator and all, yet people wanted to support artists who dared to innovate. There have always been outstanding innovators in <em>cante jondo<\/em>, from the days of <strong>Silverio Franconetti<\/strong> and <strong>Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/strong> until our days, passing by <strong>Manuel Torres, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Pepe Marchena, Manolo Caracol<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Pepe Pinto<\/strong>. Without them and many others, <em>cante<\/em> would have barely evolved and evolution is very necessary in art.<\/p>\n<p>Having said this, how good or how bad have been the fruits of this celebrated album of Camar\u00f3n, praised by some and criticized by others\u2026? More good than bad, certainly, but the passing of time has turned it into a flamenco classic, only questioned by pig-headed purists. Without any doubt, <em>La leyenda del tiempo\u00a0<\/em>is a masterpiece of music in general and of flamenco in particular. It was a slap on the table of \u2018cante jondo\u2019 renewal. Has it been controversial? Yes, without a doubt. Even Camar\u00f3n had his fears and doubts, although he always knew he had done something big and that time would eventually put that album in its rightful place. This has been the case. It\u2019s been forty years of innovation, thanks to the fact that Jos\u00e9, Pach\u00f3n and many other great musicians decided to set modernity lose and shake off folklore\u2019s shackles. Let\u2019s celebrate this anniversary, then.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
