{"id":13155,"date":"2019-06-16T12:42:23","date_gmt":"2019-06-16T10:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=13155"},"modified":"2019-06-17T01:10:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-16T23:10:22","slug":"about-arcangel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/about-arcangel\/","title":{"rendered":"About Arc\u00e1ngel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Monday*, I posted in my Facebook wall a link to a YouTube video where the <em>cantaor<\/em> <strong>Arc\u00e1ngel<\/strong> sings a <em>saeta<\/em> before Cachorro de Triana<sup>1<\/sup>, and all hell broke lose. Offensive comments started to pour in, discrediting him as <em>cantaor<\/em> and expressing a huge disrespect towards this artist from Huelva, something typical of one art divided in small republics of self-proclaimed experts of the <em>jondo<\/em>. That\u2019s nothing new: since the 19th century we\u2019ve had those controversies about what\u2019s flamenco, Gypsy or <em>jondo<\/em>, about what has <em>pellizco <\/em>and what hasn\u2019t, about the voices that tear up the soul, and about those who sweeten it.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I\u2019m a bit sick and tired of these absurd controversies, although I understand that everyone feels differently when listening to <em>cante<\/em>, and everyone has the right to express their opinion about what they like and what they dislike. I get that. <em>Cante <\/em>is not just one voice, but many, with different sounds and characteristics. Yet, those who only like Gypsy voices usually scorn the rest of us, usually in a bad way, not politely but in a disrespectful way. Oddly, those who only feel moved by voices that tear up the soul, seldom are critical with the owners of those voices, only focusing on the sound and tone, disregarding everything else. I know many <em>cantaores <\/em>and <em>cantaoras <\/em>with such voices who are a complete disaster when they sing: out of tune, out of rhythm and lacking knowledge. Gypsies and not-Gypsies alike. I can assure you that there\u2019s is a lot of mediocrity behind the <em>pellizcos <\/em>and that stale <em>duende<\/em>, which somehow are only attributed to Gypsy performers. Any interpreter with such attributes is said to sing G<em>ypsy<\/em>, that is, <em>flamenco<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to what I see and hear, Arc\u00e1ngel isn\u2019t flamenco, but just a singer of <em>zarzuelas<\/em>, operas and ballads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No other than <strong>Caballero Bonald<\/strong> once said that <strong>Silverio Franconetti<\/strong> and <strong>Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/strong> were not flamenco singers, but singers of popular songs, showing his ignorance and also his bad blood. I\u2019ve already told a story which happened after the death of <strong>Naranjito de Triana<\/strong>, the great <em>cantaor<\/em> from that district of Seville. I asked an intern working for the newspaper to call Bonald\u2019s home, asking his opinion about such a loss for <em>cante<\/em>, and the illustrious Andalusian writer said that he had \u201cnothing to say about that man\u201d. I assume it was because he wasn\u2019t Gypsy. These and other writers of old are the reason behind such contempt towards the non-Gypsy performers in flamenco, specially the successful ones, such as Arc\u00e1ngel, who, if he hadn\u2019t been any good and stayed back in Huelva, instead of becoming a leading star, wouldn\u2019t be causing such a fuss. Yet, Arc\u00e1ngel is one of the most important personalities in today\u2019s flamenco, we can\u2019t help it, and he\u2019s also a great singer, regardless of personal tastes. It\u2019s not his fault that some good Gypsy singers never left their neighborhoods or their towns. It\u2019s not his fault that his voice isn\u2019t deep and rough and, by the way, he has a beautiful voice which is as <em>flamenca <\/em>as anyone\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The type of voice isn\u2019t a measure of the quality of cante. Wasn\u2019t <strong>Manuel Vallejo<\/strong> a good cantaor? What about <strong>Pepe Marchena<\/strong>, <strong>Manuel Escacena, Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla <\/strong>and<strong> Manuel Centeno<\/strong>? They were all great singers, well respected in their own time, incidentally. They were top stars who filled theaters and bullfighting rings. Maybe that was their problem: they were successful. It wasn\u2019t their fault that others didn\u2019t succeed and had to make a living singing in private parties or shinning shoes in restaurants. Just the same, Arc\u00e1ngel can\u2019t be blamed for the fact that great cantaores, Gypsy or not, those so-called <em>pure<\/em>, work in construction or drive buses earning a meager salary. Sectarianism shouldn\u2019t exist in flamenco, which is such a varied art, with so many hues and styles. Yet, sectarianism exists and has always existed. In the end, feeling <em>pellizco<\/em> or not when listening to <em>cante<\/em> is something very subjective, depending on the sensibility of each aficionado.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>1 <\/sup><em>Cachorro de Triana<\/em>: an image of Jesus Christ, carved in 1632.
