{"id":12887,"date":"2019-06-06T23:05:14","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T21:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=12887"},"modified":"2019-06-07T15:07:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T13:07:30","slug":"are-guitarists-conceited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/are-guitarists-conceited\/","title":{"rendered":"Are guitarists conceited?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently we wondered something that, judging by the number of visits to our blog that day, was in the minds of hundreds of aficionados as well: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/why-are-cantaores-deified\">why are cantaores deified?<\/a> Some suggested dwelling into the vanity of guitarists and <em>bailaores<\/em>, too. If it\u2019s true that the artists of <em>cante<\/em>, in general, have a very high opinion of themselves (I\u2019m not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, but it\u2019s a fact), then the artists of <em>toque<\/em> are not far behind, from that <strong>Paco de Lucena<\/strong> (who, back in the late 1800s, would show off playing a set wearing a sock in his right hand) to the youngest of our days. Remember when <strong>Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9<\/strong> said that \u201cif Morente is an innovator, so are all of us\u201d? Well, the true innovators in flamenco are the guitarists, they have always been, from <strong>Frasco el Colorao<\/strong>, who, besides singing, also played the guitar, setting the <em>cantes<\/em> for performers such as <strong>Silverio, El Nitri, Diego el Lebrijano <\/strong>and<strong> T\u00edo Antonio Cagancho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Guitarists are not the vainest in flamenco, or the most self-important, not at all. Actually, it\u2019s the guitarists who venerate their masters the most. In the interviews given by the greatest guitarists, we can see that none of them have forgotten the importance and influence in their own styles of <strong>Ram\u00f3n Montoya, Sabicas, el Ni\u00f1o Ricardo <\/strong>or<strong> Mario Escudero<\/strong>. They not only praise the well-known geniuses, but also the virtually unknown masters, those who taught them the first accords and showed them how to hold a guitar\u2019s neck. Yet, these days all guitarists consider themselves to be concert guitarists, even those who play for <em>baile<\/em>. They would accompany their town\u2019s <em>cantaor<\/em> for a few days, and before you know they\u2019re already having a concert. And if they\u2019re not hired for the great festivals, then they are the first to complain that in Spain no one cares about guitarists, that only foreigners do. They are partially right about that, although whenever one of the great guitarists plays at the <em>Bienal<\/em> or at the <em>Festival de la Guitarra de C\u00f3rdoba<\/em>, they sell out and get all the media\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, there are two types of guitarists: those who have a good technique and are able to perform well pieces created by other guitarists, and the innovators who play their own compositions. Both types have great worth. Flamenco is again experiencing a good era of excellent guitarists, although it\u2019s hard to become established as a concert guitarist and to be recognized as such by everyone. Today also lingers heavily the influence of stars such as <strong>Paco de Luc\u00eda <\/strong>and<strong> Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/strong>, the greatest in the history of flamenco guitar, two true innovators, not only because they created immortal compositions, but also because they created the modern school of guitar, the current one, which is followed by most of today\u2019s guitarists. Although these days we have brilliant guitarists such as <strong>Gerardo N\u00fa\u00f1ez, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Rafael Riqueni, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Ca\u00f1izares, Jos\u00e9 Antonio Rodr\u00edguez, Antonio Rey, Ni\u00f1o Josele, Miguel \u00c1ngel Cort\u00e9s, Diego del Morao, Dani de Mor\u00f3n <\/strong>and<strong> Juan Carlos Romero<\/strong> (and the list goes on), none of them have an individual, revolutionary style, which departs from established ones and opens new paths. The creative fantasy of Vicente Amigo and the mastery of Riqueni (without forgetting the works of Ca\u00f1izares), are certainly worth of praise, but a revolution is something else. Revolutionaries in any art put their genius and talent on the table and change the course of their art. That\u2019s what Montoya, Sabicas and Ricardo did, dozens of years ago (as did <strong>Diego del Gastor <\/strong>and<strong> Melchor de Marchena<\/strong>) and after them came Paco de Luc\u00eda and Manolo Sanl\u00facar, besides other luminaries such as <strong>Ni\u00f1o Miguel, Mora\u00edto Chico <\/strong>and<strong> El Viej\u00edn<\/strong> (among others) and great masters such as <strong>Serranito<\/strong> (a forgotten star), <strong>Juan and Pepe Habichuela, Paco Cepero <\/strong>and <strong>Enrique de Melchor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Any of today\u2019s guitarists is a great musician, an excellent communicator and a virtuoso. Yet, being a genius is something else. Geniuses are seldom humble, with a few exceptions, although guitarists are more discreet than <em>cantaores<\/em>. Are guitarists conceited? Hard to say. It would seem that whoever has not yet re-invented guitar, is just about to do so, although guitarists are not the most conceited of all <em>jondos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
