{"id":12696,"date":"2019-05-30T22:11:50","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T20:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=12696"},"modified":"2019-05-30T22:18:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T20:18:20","slug":"jerezs-pena-los-cernicalos-celebrates-50th-its-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/actualidad-en\/jerezs-pena-los-cernicalos-celebrates-50th-its-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Jerez&#8217;s Pe\u00f1a \u2018Los Cern\u00edcalos\u2019 celebrates its 50th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been 50 years since a group of Friends and flamenco aficionados decided to create the first <em>pe\u00f1a flamenca<\/em> in the province of C\u00e1diz (It\u2019s also the third oldest in the world, becoming established at almost the same time as <strong>La Plater\u00eda<\/strong> in Granada and <strong>Juan Breva<\/strong> in M\u00e1laga). Back then, fourteen young men dared to formalize spontaneous gatherings which became meetings of <em>cabales<\/em> (as flamenco buffs are called). Nowadays, only four of those original founders of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flamencodejerez.com\/\">Pe\u00f1a Los Cern\u00edcalos<\/a> remain: <strong>Joaqu\u00edn Rodr\u00edguez, Juanenri, Pepe Mateos<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Antonio Ben\u00edtez<\/strong>, who is known by everyone as Anto\u00f1\u00edn. The latter was appointed president without his knowledge, as he left for work when his friends met in his yard and decided he should lead the brand-new entity. During the five decades elapsed since 1969, the good Anto\u00f1\u00edn not only has offered the yard of his house, which is basically his private yard, but has also fulfilled various roles in the board of directors and continues to encourage the new generations.<\/p>\n<p>We must remember that in those days, during Franco\u2019s dictatorship, it wasn\u2019t easy to organize a gathering of friends, as a government delegate was required to attend. And why would a <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em> be named after a bird? (\u201c<em>cern\u00edcalo<\/em>\u201d meaning \u201ckestrel\u201d). It was curious. Some suggested naming the <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em> after <strong>Fernando Terremoto<\/strong>, others after <strong>Agujetas<\/strong>, but others argued that choosing specific artists would limit the entity to focus on them, their music, their <em>cantes<\/em>, their descendants\u2026 so they decided to adopt an analogy with the kestrel, a small bird of prey who hunts by night. The group of fourteen friends would also go out at night, to talk about <em>cante<\/em> at <strong>Kiosko del Retiro<\/strong>, which was the original meeting place. Months after getting this adventure started, they moved to a hall at <strong>El Pelir\u00f3n <\/strong>district of Jerez, where they could invite friends and artists to contribute to their invaluable gatherings. Then they moved to Estancia Barrera, next to Tio Juane\u2019s metal workshop, until they finally settled at their current address on Sancho Vizca\u00edno Street in the <strong>San Miguel<\/strong> district.<\/p>\n<p>Among the merits of these great, lifelong flamenco aficionados we can mention offering advice to other <em>pe\u00f1as<\/em> that were later established, regarding regulations and guidelines, organizing recitals of great quality, bringing out of oblivion flamenco artists from the old days, promoting the most traditional <em>cante<\/em> and also fostering new generations through contests, advice, recording of albums and academic training in the entity itself\u2026 We can\u2019t forget their flagship events: \u00a0<em>Preg\u00f3n Flamenco<\/em> during Holy Week \u00a0\u2014 46 editions up to this year \u2014, the International Flamenco Guitar Contest \u2014 which won\u2019t take place at this moment due to lack of funding \u2014 and the series <strong><em>Noches de La Plazuela<\/em><\/strong>, in its 29<sup>th<\/sup> edition this week. <em>Saetas<\/em> have also featured prominently in the programs of this <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Last Saturday, May 25th, the guitarist <strong>Diego del Morao <\/strong>performed a dreamy recital in the stage of this <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em>. This Saturday, June 1<sup>st<\/sup>, the protagonist will be <strong>Mar\u00eda del Mar Moreno<\/strong>\u00a0and her <em>Jerez Puro<\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>Antonio Malena<\/strong>, among others. Then, on June 8<sup>th<\/sup>, <strong>Familia del T\u00edo Juane<\/strong>\u00a0(with Nano de Jerez and Ni\u00f1o de la Fragua) will perform. It\u2019s a lineup of indisputable quality that commemorates an anniversary attesting to the positive impact of this <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em>, which has featured performances by artists of the stature of <strong>Manuel Agujetas, Manuel Moneo, Paquera de Jerez <\/strong>and have had the friendly support of <strong>Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All of that is the result of love for flamenco, particularly Anto\u00f1\u00edn\u2019s, without trying to minimize the contribution of the other members. This 87-year-old man from C\u00f3rdoba (born in 1933) has always looked after the <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em>, its activities and its respect for <em>cante jondo<\/em>. He experienced the Spanish Civil War, endured hunger, saw people die and settled in Jerez when he was just 13 years old, where he was welcomed with open arms as he worked in the fields and later as a bellboy in one of the city\u2019s casinos and befriended Gypsies and non-Gypsies, rich and poor, alike. That\u2019s why Antonio has always gotten along well with <em>flamencos<\/em>, because he understands hardship, being excluded from society and the value of respecting others.
