{"id":12656,"date":"2019-05-30T11:40:38","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T09:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=12656"},"modified":"2019-05-30T18:35:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T16:35:49","slug":"paquera-remembrance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/estela-flamenca\/paquera-remembrance\/","title":{"rendered":"Paquera, remembrance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019d gone to M\u00e1laga that sunny April day in 2004 to visit a dancer I\u2019d known for many years from the Taberna Gitana, spend a couple of days having roasted sardines on the beach and seeing flamenco friends <strong>Ca\u00f1eta<\/strong> and <strong>Jos\u00e9 Salazar<\/strong>.\u00a0 We had only gotten through our first couple of beers when we heard the news on television: Francisca M\u00e9ndez Garrido, \u201c<strong>Paquera de Jerez<\/strong>\u201d had just died.\u00a0The sea breeze stopped blowing for a moment, and I looked at the people around me, but they seemed not to be aware that a force of nature had fallen silent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I had to get back to Jerez.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know why, but I had to return.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My head was full of images from a year and a half earlier when the <strong>Festival del Cante de las Minas de La Uni\u00f3n<\/strong> was dedicated to Paquera.\u00a0 Numerous honors and plaques, words of praise for this bigger-than-life artist who at the time had just made her first and last trip to Japan where the adventure was immortalized in the fine documentary <em>Por Oriente Sale el Sol <\/em>of <strong>Fernando Gonz\u00e1lez-Caballos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I was in the first row for her historic 2002 performance in La Uni\u00f3n.\u00a0 Never before had I sensed so strongly the division that exists between the fandango zone of southeastern Spain, and the sole\u00e1-siguiriya-ton\u00e1s zone of the west.\u00a0Paquera felt it as well.\u00a0 After receiving a long and sincere ovation worthy of Her Highness, the lady from Jerez gestured with both hands like the Queen of England, and spoke with long pauses as if addressing beings from a distant planet: <em>I like your songs\u2026very much<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her stage presence was overwhelming.\u00a0Standing, she clutched a chair on either side as if providing an electric arc to transmit her message. Her surprising voice pumped out a megadose of flamenco that made our insides tremble.<\/p>\n<p>All this ran through my mind as I tried to fall asleep in my apartment that night back in Jerez beside the Plaza del Arenal, as the <strong>Queen of Buler\u00edas<\/strong> lay in state at the old Town Hall, less than a hundred yards away.\u00a0 It was a strange feeling knowing she was so close by, and at just past three in the morning I felt compelled to get up and dress to go see for myself if such a tremendous vital force could really be stopped so totally: all that power and humanity, it seemed to defy logic.<\/p>\n<p>The following day I followed Paquera from the chapel, to the church of San Telmo, to the Merced cemetery.\u00a0 Hundreds of people trailed behind and the attending artists gave mute testimony to the enormity of the loss: <strong>Rancapino, La Sallago, Fernando Terremoto, Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa, El Nano de Jerez, Manuel Parrilla, Matilde Coral, Paco Cepero, Macanita, Segundo Falc\u00f3n, Ni\u00f1o Jero, El Pipa, Andr\u00e9s Pe\u00f1a, Mora\u00edto<\/strong>&#8230;many many more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Within our heads, the heavy silence was full of her voice on this grey rainy day:\u00a0 buler\u00edas as only she could sing them, tientos, tangos, seguiriyas, sole\u00e1 por buler\u00eda, fandangos, bone-crunching saetas, taranto, alegr\u00edas, an endless assortment of Jerez-style villancicos, Caracol zambras\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The powers that be waited too long to crown this queen with the honorific prize \u201cComp\u00e1s del Cante\u201d she was to receive only days afterwards.\u00a0Nor could she wait to be officially named \u201cFavorite Daughter of Jerez de la Frontera\u201d.\u00a0 Not even her appointment with <strong>King Juan Carlos I<\/strong> to receive from his hands the Gold Medal of the Arts was enough to stop her premature disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>They used to say about <strong>Manuel Torre<\/strong> that once you heard him live, his voice got into your ears and stayed there forever.
