{"id":12405,"date":"2019-05-21T21:24:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T19:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=12405"},"modified":"2019-05-22T23:05:25","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T21:05:25","slug":"does-cante-need-a-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/does-cante-need-a-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Does cante need a leader?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the questions I get most often asked in social media and in the taverns of my city, where I live \u2013 if this is living, as Fernando de Triana would say \u2013 is: who is the leader in today\u2019s <em>cante<\/em>? Who is the foreman, the boss? My answer is always the same: there is no consensus nowadays on this. Has there to be a leader? I don\u2019t think so, but in Andalusia is common for people to feel the need of a leader, a master, a bossy boots. It happens in bullfighting and in <em>cante <\/em>too.<\/p>\n<p>If we made a survey, we\u2019d find many surprises, because tastes vary greatly, and they can be downright weird. No one dare to mess with their own town\u2019s <em>cantaor<\/em>, that\u2019s the philosophy. If we review the history of <em>cante<\/em>, spanning almost two hundred years, we find great artists such as El Planeta, El Fillo, Silverio, Chac\u00f3n, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Manuel Vallejo, Manolo Caracol, Antonio Mairena, Fosforito, Paquera de Jerez, Terremoto, Enrique Morente, Lebrijano, Jos\u00e9 Menese, Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa, Manuel Agujetas and Camar\u00f3n de la Isla. Today\u2019s leading artists are <strong>Carmen Linares, Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9, Mayte Mart\u00edn, Miguel Poveda, Estrella Morente <\/strong>and<strong> Arc\u00e1ngel<\/strong>. New voices have also thrown their hats in the ring of <em>cante<\/em>, such as Marina Heredia, Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez, Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez, Antonio Reyes, Argentina, Rancapino hijo and Pedro el Grana\u00edno. There are many more, but these are the better known voices these days.<\/p>\n<p>Is any of them strong enough to become <em>cante<\/em>\u2019s boss? We humans tend to glorify the past, and particularly those who have passed away. Many think that it\u2019s impossible to have again geniuses such as <strong>Morente<\/strong> or <strong>Camar\u00f3n<\/strong>, two revolutionaries, and I pretty much agree with them. However, although the great majority of the hundreds of <em>cante <\/em>performers skillfully promoted today on social media do not have any significant quality, some of them might become geniuses. They are young, and one has to give them time, but they attract thousands of people to the festivals and theaters, and they are the talk of the town among flamenco fans around the world. They are the future of non-commercial <em>cante jondo<\/em>, those mentioned above, some more admired than others. Some of them sing much better than those we consider the best of the XX century, but they have to endure being compared with others, which is unfair and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Could one of them become a Mairena, a Marchena, a Caracol or a Morente? I doubt it, although I hope so. One of their problems is the lack of a fan base, and the other problem is the lack of study. Without those two essential premises, it would be impossible for them to make <em>cante <\/em>history, like those named in the first lines above. If we add to this the great tendency towards imitation apparent in their performances and their lack of a personal stamp, the future of <em>cante <\/em>is rather bleak. It\u2019s not that there aren\u2019t good <em>cantaores<\/em>. The problem is that half of them copy the classics, often without knowledge, and the other half can\u2019t make their minds regarding their personal style.
