Priego<\/strong> is not one of the most flamenco<\/em> towns in C\u00f3rdoba, but it has good aficionados who organize its flamenco events. It is one of the most beautiful towns in Andalusia and I was there last Sunday, April 28th<\/sup>, to present the 2nd<\/sup> Arremate Flamenco<\/a>\u00a0at the Casa de la Cultura<\/em> courtyard, which was packed with aficionados in every available chair. There was a snack bar with a good supply of montaditos <\/em>(a local type of sandwich), rolls and seafood, and there was a good atmosphere in general, considering it was a Sunday of first communions and general elections in Spain.<\/p>\n

That made the artists come in good spirits on the stage, which was decorated with farm tools related to the harvesting of olives and the making of one of the best olive oil in the world. Priego felt a bit like Arahal<\/strong>, the town I was born, where the best manzanilla<\/em> olives are grown and where a very good olive oil is made, even if it doesn\u2019t have the renown of the olives from the south of C\u00f3rdoba.<\/p>\n

We enjoyed a good day of cante<\/em>, particularly because it wasn\u2019t tiresome. There were two artists in the first part, and two artists in the second. In the first part, I loved Amparo Ramos<\/strong>, who is from Almod\u00f3var del R\u00edo but now lives in Priego. Before coming on stage, she complained that her throat wasn\u2019t feeling well, but the truth is that she was overflowing with strength and good taste, and was superbly accompanied by the guitar of the young teacher Manuel \u00c1ngel Calahorro<\/strong>, who is from Torredonjimeno, a beautiful town in Ja\u00e9n.<\/p>\n

Antonio Mej\u00edas<\/strong>, from Montilla (C\u00f3rdoba), was spectacular. This cantaor<\/em> should have more renown than he already has. I loved all he sang, but I particularly liked when he evoked Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n por sole\u00e1<\/em> and some other creators of fandangos<\/em>, such as Antonio el Sevillano<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Manuel Vallejo<\/strong>. Maestro\u00a0Antonio Carri\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0accompanied him like silk and overall it was a very moving performance.<\/p>\n

In the second part, when it was very hot and already under the tent, Mois\u00e9s Vargas<\/strong>\u00a0proved why he is one of the cantaores<\/em> from Huelva with a great future. He not only has a very strong voice, but also knows how to handle it well and has a very flamenco<\/em> sound. He\u2019s an artist, so nothing will prevent him from becoming a renowned professional, because his voice is very cantaora<\/em>, and it seems he has very clear ideas about what is and what isn\u2019t flamenco. The event ended with a performance by one of the best cantaores<\/em> of our days, Rancapino Chico<\/strong>. Nowadays there isn\u2019t anyone who sings with better taste, more feeling and better rhythm. He\u2019s an inspired cantaor<\/em>, but his good technique allows him to achieve an amazing degree of quality. He took us to C\u00e1diz\u2019s La Caleta por alegr\u00edas<\/em> and was superb in some cantes de C\u00e1diz por sole\u00e1<\/em>, all wonderfully accompanied by Carri\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

It was a nice trip, a good festival and better olive oil. We thank the Asociaci\u00f3n Flamenca Antonio Mej\u00edas<\/strong>, its president,\u00a0Antonio Carrillo Exp\u00f3sito<\/strong>, and Mr. Mej\u00edas himself for their kind invitation. It was a very worthwhile trip.<\/p>\n
