In my early days as aficionado, when I wanted to be a flamenco critic and write about it, every newspaper and radio station in Seville had a flamenco specialist, usually someone quite renowned, although there were all kinds. Listening to <strong>Miguel Acal<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>La Voz del Guadalquivir<\/em> radio station or reading <strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Bl\u00e1zquez<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong>s articles in the ABC newspaper was delightful. They were not just well-versed specialists, but truly passionate aficionados. I could also mention <strong>Emilio Jim\u00e9nez D\u00edaz, Paco Herrera, Juan Luis Manfredi<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Agust\u00edn G\u00f3mez<\/strong>, from C\u00f3rdoba, but who was also read and listened to in Seville, as well as <strong>Rafael Salinas<\/strong>, also from C\u00f3rdoba,<strong> Gonzalo Rojo<\/strong>\u00a0from M\u00e1laga or\u00a0<strong>Juan de la Plata<\/strong>\u00a0from Jerez. They were my references. Regarding books, there were <strong>Domingo Manfredi Cano, Manuel R\u00edos Ruiz, Jos\u00e9 Blas Vega, Fernando Qui\u00f1ones, \u00c1ngel \u00c1lvarez Caballero <\/strong>and <strong>Manolo Barrios<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, there are also important flamenco critics and specialized writers. Yet, just about anyone writes about flamenco these days, whether they know anything about it or not, and that\u2019s how it goes. Sometimes I\u2019m stunned when I read flamenco articles in newspapers of the stature of <em>El Mundo<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em>. Things are written about <strong>Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Rosal\u00eda<\/strong> that should be taken to court, at the very least. \u201cAmong the founding voices of flamenco is the one of Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez. Not of today\u2019s flamenco, but of flamenco\u201d, they stated in El Mundo, according to a summary I got about what has been written in newspapers regarding that artist from Huelva, on occasion of her latest album, <em>Visto en El Jueves. <\/em>What the heck is that? Let\u2019s not even talk about what\u2019s been said about Rosal\u00eda, claiming that she has revolutionized flamenco and comparing her with <strong>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Camar\u00f3n<\/strong>, and other nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> ExpoFlamenco<\/strong> we seek to protect and promote traditional flamenco, without excluding the new trends. It\u2019s not easy, because a music website must get the highest amount of visits to attract publicity and generate some income. We don\u2019t even have a commercial department, but we have to try to break even. Do people really care about traditional flamenco? People do care about it, a lot, despite all the attacks from those who think it\u2019s an old, obsolete and stale relic. Do you really believe that Ni\u00f1a la de los Peines\u2019s tangos, <strong>Mellizo<\/strong>\u2018s malague\u00f1als or <strong>Serneta<\/strong>\u2018s soleares are out of fashion? These are timeless pieces, just like happens in classical music, opera or jazz.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that flamenco is influenced on a daily basis by other musical genres and by changes in our evolving society. This happens in flamenco, jazz, rock, poetry, theater and gastronomy. Yet, that is not a license to make hogwash or to say that anything can be considered flamenco. No, not everything goes. And it hurts that colleagues whom I respect are playing along with the nation-wide media who decided long ago to cater to commercialism and lies in other to attract new readers. It\u2019s a real shame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
