{"id":11935,"date":"2019-04-24T22:56:23","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T20:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=11935"},"modified":"2019-04-24T22:57:46","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T20:57:46","slug":"flamenco-hasnt-featured-in-the-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/bordonazo-new\/flamenco-hasnt-featured-in-the-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Flamenco hasn\u2019t featured in the campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t usually talk about politics in <strong>ExpoFlamenco<\/strong>, because it\u2019s a website focused on the <em>arte jondo<\/em>, but I\u2019ve watched both debates of the four Spanish presidential candidates and I\u2019ve sadly confirmed that no one really cares about culture, even as this country promotes itself as a cultural destination. Indeed, some of the millions of tourists who come here every year do so to enjoy our music and our dance, and many thousands come to get immersed in flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t complain that none of the candidates ever mentioned the word \u201cflamenco\u201d, because this is not the most important issue in Spain, or even in Andalusia, which is the cradle of this art. Although, since we\u2019re in the midst of an electoral campaign, the government\u2019s vice-president, <strong>Carmen Calvo<\/strong>, went to the <em>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/em> of Jerez to say that it was the best thing about our region. She even explained to the minister <strong>Marlasca <\/strong>what footwork meant. Dancing like a workhorse, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>Last Tuesday I was giving a lecture at the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/cpmcristobaldemorales.es\/\">Conservatorio de M\u00fasica Crist\u00f3bal de Morales<\/a><\/em>, in Seville, and its students were amazed to learn about the rich flamenco history in Seville and, above all, how little the <em>Junta de Andaluc\u00eda<\/em> and Seville\u2019s City Council care about it. What they care about is that the tourists come over and fill the hotels, the airport and the taverns of Triana and Alameda de H\u00e9rcules.<\/p>\n<p>Seville doesn\u2019t have a flamenco archive center, or a museum about this art and its history in the city. It has nothing here, as if flamenco had been born in, say, Ponteverda, Galicia. Many of the greatest artist of <em>cante<\/em>, <em>baile<\/em> and <em>toque<\/em> have been born in the province of Seville. This is the land of <strong>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Pepe Marchena, Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n, Manuel Vallejo, Manolo Caracol, Antonio Mairena, Ni\u00f1o Ricardo, Pastora Imperio, Rafael Ortega, Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa, Manuela Carrasco, Lole y Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Rafael Riqueni<\/strong>. To no avail.<\/p>\n<p>Flamenco is an art that remains alive because its aficionados keep it alive. The <em>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/em> were doing a great work in behalf of flamenco, until they were politicized by the <em>Federaci\u00f3n de Pe\u00f1as<\/em> and now they only function with government subsidies. There are exceptions, of course, such as <em>pe\u00f1a<\/em> <strong>Torres Macarena<\/strong>, which has a year-round program so that aficionados still can enjoy this art form when it\u2019s not featured in the theaters, because there aren\u2019t that many good flamenco shows through the year<\/p>\n<p>Flamenco hasn\u2019t been featured in Spain\u2019s electoral campaign. Maybe it\u2019s a good thing, because this art is already too politicized. The fact that Culture in general hasn\u2019t been mentioned in the debates, but for one minute only \u2014 and just as a result of a suggestion by the moderator \u2014 is significant. Thus it\u2019s us, the citizens, the aficionados, who have to keep promoting and protecting it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
