That\u2019s sad. Nope, I\u2019m still around. I decided to stay away for a bit until the Rosal\u00eda effect died down, but I see this hasn\u2019t happened, and that there is still a lot of bad taste when it comes to flamenco listening. Not that she sings flamenco anyway, but she fakes it and people fall for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Do you like the Holy Week?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Not particularly, but I enjoy the music on the streets. And <em>saetas<\/em>, of course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Are you in the mood to talk about <em>saeteros<\/em> and <em>saeteras<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-I sure do. I always liked El Gloria, Manuel Torres, Tom\u00e1s, Caracol and Pepe Valencia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Don\u2019t you like any female <em>saeteras<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Frankly, not many. Pastora, Isabelita de Jerez, La Finito\u2026 The true <em>flamencas<\/em>, of course. I can\u2019t stand that long and folkloric <em>saeta<\/em> that some people sing, and since I don\u2019t owe anything to anyone, I can just say it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Yet, you have to acknowledge that women have sung very well <em>por saetas<\/em>, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Absolutely. The problem is all mine, it\u2019s an issue with my ear. I prefer male <em>saeteros<\/em>. Look, in Triana there was a <em>saetero<\/em> no one talks about, from the 1800s, who left all others in the dust. He only sang <em>saetas<\/em>, and just on special occasions. I met him when he was very old and living in C\u00f3rdoba, because left Triana when he was still young. He was known as <em>El Relojero<\/em>, \u2018The Watchmaker\u2019, which was his actual occupation. He was born in Puerto Street in 1908, but when he was still a kid he went to San Bernardo and one night he sang with Manuel Torres, and people say Torres got trashed. El Relojero was Gypsy, from the family of Francisco la Perla, he told me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-Didn\u2019t he ever record anything?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-There are two <em>saetas<\/em> of him recorded by Pepe Pinto in an old tape recorder, one of those with reels. I have them. After listening to this man, I don\u2019t feel like listening to anyone else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-What is the <em>saeta<\/em> of Seville?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-It\u2019s a very <em>flamenco<\/em> style of <em>saeta<\/em> with influences from Jerez. Have in mind that the <em>saeteros<\/em> of Jerez came to Seville and created a unique style: Frijones, Manuel Torres, La Serrana, El Gloria and his sisters, particularly La Pompi. Then there is another style, lyrical, which I don\u2019t like much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-The style of Ni\u00f1a de la Alfalfa?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-She was an opera Singer and had a superb technique, but she didn\u2019t quite move me. I prefer the Gypsy style. Caracol and Manuel Mairena, for example.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What\u2019s your favorite\u00a0place in Seville to listen to <\/b><em style=\"font-weight: bold;\">saetas<\/em><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Well, La Campana street is wonderful. Listening a <em>saeta<\/em> there makes me think of the Burrero caf\u00e9, the Novedades\u2026 it\u2019s so nice. In that street the history of the best flamenco of all time was written. Yet, there is another place that I love, too: Cuna street. In that street Pepe Valencia used to sing. He had a unique style, and he would put up quite a show. People would fill the street and won\u2019t leave until he finished singing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>-I love you, grandpa.
