I remember a press conference at the Festival de Jerez about ten years ago.\u00a0The following day\u2019s performers spoke about their respective shows and fielded questions afterwards. \u00a0When it was time for open dialogue with the audience, no one seemed to have any questions.\u00a0 So I raised my hand with a question for Capullo de Jerez: \u201cIs it possible to learn flamenco singing?\u201d I asked, feigning innocence.\u00a0 Miguel Flores Quir\u00f3s took no more than a fraction of a second to snap back with one single word: \u201cNO!\u201d.<\/p>\n

It was an awkward moment just barely smoothed over with self-conscious coughing and murmurs among the audience. \u00a0That year the Festival was proud of having programmed a cante workshop with Capullo himself. I was playing the devil\u2019s advocate since I honestly don\u2019t believe it\u2019s possible to teach cante.\u00a0<\/em>Obviously, many many people have learned<\/em>to sing flamenco, or there would be no cantaores.\u00a0 But teaching<\/em>cante is something else.\u00a0 It implies a classroom, a teacher and one or more students jotting down verses before trying to duplicate the melody and comp\u00e1s demonstrated by the teacher. \u00a0Some singers have given classes via Skype or YouTube.<\/p>\n

Many of you are now making mental lists of all the singers who give, or have given cante classes. Taleg\u00f3n de C\u00f3rdoba in Madrid was one of the first, and his classes were well-attended for many years.\u00a0 Esperanza Fern\u00e1ndez, Rafael de Utrera, Miguel Ortega and In\u00e9s Bac\u00e1n among others have also offered instruction. At several festivals such as those of Mont-de-Marsan and Grenoble, flamenco singing workshops have occasionally been included on the program.\u00a0 The C\u00f3rdoba Conservatory includes instruction in cante, Calixto S\u00e1nchez has done noteworthy work in this area, and of course the Fundaci\u00f3n Cristina Heeren in Seville has long offered students the chance to learn to sing flamenco with exemplary teachers such as Naranjitode Triana, Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa and Juan Jos\u00e9 Amador among others.\u00a0From the Foundation have come accomplished professionals such as Laura Vital and Argentina, in addition to three winners of the L\u00e1mpara Minera del Festival de las Minas de La Uni\u00f3n: Gema Jim\u00e9nez, Roc\u00edo M\u00e1rquez and Jeromo Segura.\u00a0 An impressive track record to say the least.<\/p>\n

But for the most part, these outstanding students were deeply involved in studying cante before choosing to polish their technique and knowledge with the guidance of experienced elders.\u00a0 They had already put in endless hours of study, learning the forms, the comp\u00e1s and the possibilities of their own voices, in addition to numerous performances.\u00a0Classes were a way of fine-tuning their art and gaining self-confidence.<\/p>\n

Being fascinated with what seems to me the unfeasibility of teaching cante, I\u2019ve made it my business over the years to observe cante classes whenever possible.\u00a0 In Grenoble for example, I sat in on a class conducted by our dearly-missed Fernando Terremoto.\u00a0 In a small circle of students, Fernando asked each person what flamenco they could sing.\u00a0One girl timidly said she knew alegr\u00edas, and went on to sing alegr\u00edas (canti\u00f1as) de C\u00f3rdoba.\u00a0 Fernando pointed out that that wasn\u2019t exactly alegr\u00edas, and stepped up to the blackboard to write some verses of alegr\u00edas. He then sang the verses with guitar, and afterwards said to the student: \u201cnow you try it\u201d.\u00a0 Naturally, after just one listen, the girl was at a loss to reproduce anything like alegr\u00edas.<\/p>\n

Trite as it no doubt sounds to contemporary flamenco theoreticians and investigators, and while it\u2019s entirely possible to learn verses, melodies and comp\u00e1s through repetition and recordings, you can usually tell when someone has not had contact with a living breathing flamenco ambience. Not necessarily the family, but some sort of immersion.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an anecdote involving guitar that illustrates the point. A guitarist friend of mine, a great admirer of Paco de Luc\u00eda, stumbled upon another guitarist playing Paco\u2019s alegr\u00edas La Barrosa<\/em>at a Spanish restaurant in New York.\u00a0 Afterwards my friend congratulated the guitarist on the \u201calegr\u00edas\u201d, but the latter curtly informed my friend that the piece was not alegr\u00edas at all, but La Barrosa.\u00a0<\/em>Clearly he lacked the foundation to support the structure.<\/p>\n

My best advice to anyone wanting to learn to sing flamenco:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Glean what you can from recordings of basic styles by reputable singers.<\/li>\n
  2. Find a guitarist with notions of cante accompaniment to practice with on a regular basis.<\/li>\n
  3. Seek out any place, public or private, where flamenco people gather in order to listen to one another.<\/li>\n
  4. As soon as possible, offer to sing for flamenco dance classes if there are any in your area, and spend the rest of your life putting all the pieces together.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
