There has to be and eagerness to be a <em>cantaor<\/em>, to feel <em>flamenco<\/em>, to accept that being a <em>cantaor<\/em> implies defending a position before this art, like <strong>Chac\u00f3n, Manolo Caracol, Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0or <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong> did in their days. Anyone can be a singer, but it\u2019s necessary to have that specific mindset to be a <em>cantaor<\/em>. I don\u2019t understand some artists who say that they are more than a <em>cantaor<\/em>, as if being a <em>cantaor<\/em> were a little thing. They say so because sometimes they get off the tracks trying to prove they\u2019re able to create new things. Create what, exactly?<\/p>\n<p>Antonia Contreras is a lady <em>cantaora<\/em> who performs traditional <em>cante <\/em>and who defends an artistic legacy, like that of <strong>La Trini de M\u00e1laga<\/strong>, for example. Interpreting the traditional performers of <em>cante<\/em> is something very important, and I see this as the best way to honor them. Blatant imitation is something else, but Antonia doesn\u2019t imitate anyone, she sings in the traditional way and puts her personal imprint in her <em>cantes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This can be attested in her latest album, <em>La voz vivida<\/em>. Yet, there is something else I particularly like about this great artist: her discretion: Antonia doesn\u2019t do things just to be popular or to show off, but she limits herself to sing where she\u2019s hired and to elevate the name of M\u00e1laga, the beautiful and very <em>flamenca<\/em> province she\u2019s from. Antonia has the flavor of M\u00e1laga when she sings, and if we close our eyes when we listen to her, we can picture M\u00e1laga\u2019s hills and the steep streets of \u00c1lora and Tajo de Ronda. <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong>, the wisest of the wise, believed that flamenco purity was the ability to convey the flavor of the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Antonia is just that: the flavor of M\u00e1laga\u2019s landscape, and even its scent. Nowadays she\u2019s the best <em>cantaora<\/em> of her generation, a <em>maestra<\/em> in the strict sense of the word. And we must always support the <em>maestras<\/em> if we don\u2019t want <em>cante jondo<\/em> to end up as a matter of pop singers claiming to be <em>cantaoras<\/em>.
