Diego Torres Amaya, \u201cDiego de Mor\u00f3n\u201d, naif guitarist, son of Joselero de Mor\u00f3n and nephew of Diego del Gastor.\u00a0 In the 1960s and 70s, we called him \u201cDieguito\u201d.\u00a0 Aside from his being a young adolescent, it was to distinguish him from his uncle, Diego del Gastor.\u00a0 The \u201cgastore\u00f1o\u201d nephews, in addition to Dieguito, are Juan and Agust\u00edn, effervescent and authentic, more flamenco than anyone, and the very brilliant Paco del Gastor, guitarists all.<\/p>\n
Dieguito, Diego de Mor\u00f3n was always different from the rest. \u00a0Fighting with his guitar to drag out the notes kicking and screaming, fingers getting caught in the strings, the aggressive thumping on the instrument, broken fingernails, legs kicking out sideways\u2026\u00a0 Then, suddenly, a sweet caressing sound. \u00a0It\u2019s like having a bipolar lover.\u00a0 And always the unmistakable attack, the anachronistic, marginal, unpredictable, irregular but honest sound. Music that\u2019s immune to evolution.\u00a0 When Diego clicks into the groove, he\u2019s the best guitarist in the world.<\/p>\n
Memories taunt and tantalize.\u00a0 Were they dreams or did all that actually happen nearly 50 years ago when there was only one television set in town?\u00a0 Going up the hill to Casa Pepe (to watch the one television set and have a tapa of spinach with chickpeas) in search of flamenco friends, or the Bar Alem\u00e1n, the Pasaje, Bar Barea, the Miguelito\u2026you could often find Diego de Mor\u00f3n at the Miguelito, or living at the Fonda Pascual.\u00a0 Lanky and thin even now, just quirky enough to be a card-carrying flamenco, with his homespun science and philosophy.<\/p>\n
Of all the relatives of Diego del Gastor, Diego de Mor\u00f3n is the most faithful to the school (when I lived in Mor\u00f3n, strangers would occasionally come to my door asking for directions to the \u201cschool\u201d, which of course did not exist in any physical sense), the one who best captures that peculiar sound that isn\u2019t like guitar-playing from anywhere else.\u00a0 A second generation of Mor\u00f3n followers who were too young to have known the elder Diego, have adopted Diego de Mor\u00f3n as their rallying point and figurehead.<\/p>\n
On Friday, April 5th, in Alcal\u00e1 de Guadaira, at the Teatro Guti\u00e9rrez de Alba at 9:30 pm, Diego de Mor\u00f3n will be the object of a tribute to commemorate his 50 years of profession.\u00a0 A great number of artists will participate, including Juana Amaya, Pepe Torres, David el Galli, Paco Amparo, Javier Heredia, Luis Pe\u00f1a, Juan del Gastor, El Torombo and many many others.<\/p>\n
