Juan Antonio Santiago Salazar, whose stage name is Enrique el Extreme\u00f1o<\/em>, was born in Zafra (Badajoz), in 1954, although he was only a few months old when his family moved to the province of Huelva. His stage name is a nod to his birthplace, as Badajoz belongs to the Spanish region of Extremadura. He was barely a teenager when Antonio S\u00e1nchez Pecino, father of Paco de Luc\u00eda, discovered him when he was part of the group Los Mayorales, which didn\u2019t perform flamenco proper, but sevillanas<\/em>, rumbas<\/em> and other songs with a flamecoish bent. \u201cJust like Los Marisme\u00f1os\u201d, he says. With just 15 or 16 years old, he went to Madrid to sing at Los Canasteros and Villa Rosa, among other tablaos<\/em>, and he hasn\u2019t stopped singing ever since. He\u2019s been a professional cantaor<\/em> for 50 years, and he has done so many things that a biography wouldn\u2019t suffice to include it all. A whole encyclopedia would have to be written about him.<\/p>\n

El Extreme\u00f1o will be honored this Saturday, March 16th, at\u00a0Pe\u00f1a Flamenca<\/em> El Pozo de las Penas<\/a>\u00a0in Villafranca Los Palacios, the oldest pe\u00f1a<\/em> in Seville. It\u2019s a well-deserved tribute to a cantaor<\/em> who is the best in his specialty, singing for baile<\/em>. He is also a great cantaor<\/em> in his own right, with seven albums released and having a powerful voice full of comp\u00e1s<\/em>. At 64 years of age, his name is already engraved in the history of cante<\/em> with golden letters.<\/p>\n

\n\u2013 I believe it would have been Pilar L\u00f3pez. Curro V\u00e9lez too, with whom I travelled a lot in his company. Also Farruco, Rafael el Negro, Matilde Coral, Mario Maya, Manuela Carrasco, La Yerbabuena\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2013 Do you consider yourself the foremost cantaor<\/em> for baile<\/em>?<\/strong>
\n\u2013 I let others decide.<\/p>\n

\u2013 In your opinion, who has been the best cantaor<\/em> for baile<\/em>?<\/strong>
\n\u2013 I\u2019s hard to pick just one. Chano Lobato was very good in this specialty. Also, Juan Villar, Juan Jos\u00e9 Amador\u2026 Many others. I know all of them and I\u2019ve also worked with them, so I can attest that they were all really good. And nowadays there are very good cantaores <\/em>for baile<\/em>, too.<\/p>\n

\u2013 It\u2019s a very hard specialty, don\u2019t you think?<\/strong>
\n\u2013 I think so, definitely. It\u2019s necessary not only to know how to sing, but also to have knowledge about baile<\/em>, guitar, choreography, lightning\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2013And a bit about psychology too, because each bailaor<\/em> and each bailaora<\/em> lives in their own world. <\/strong>
